Storey’s heroics in double-OT lift Pickford over Rudyard, Cedarville falls

PICKFORD — Tommy Storey’s two-point conversion run in the second overtime gave Pickford a 44-42 victory Friday over Rudyard.

It was a fitting ending to a classic battle in which Storey rushed 43 times for 237 yards and scored five touchdowns.

Pickford is 4-0 and 1-0 in the Great Lakes 8-Man Conference East-1 Division. It was Rudyard’s (3-1) first loss of the season. It was also a matchup between the No. 2 ranked Panthers and No. 10 ranked Bulldogs, as both teams found themselves in the first batch of AP rankings last week.

Rudyard led early, going up 14-6 after the first quarter and 22-6 at halftime. Kallen Lawlor caught a pair of touchdown passes – of 65 and 78 yards – from Cam Peterson, who also had a rushing touchdown for the Bulldogs.

In the third quarter, however, Storey ran for a pair of scores then added a fourth quarter touchdown and two-point conversion to tie the game with 9:37 left.

In the first overtime, both teams scored. Pickford scored first on a 6-yard run by Storey and Peterson came back to tie the game. Both teams missed the point-after attempts.

In the second overtime, Rudyard’s Aidan Nickel scored from 10 yards out, but the two-point play failed. Storey scored from three yards out, then added the conversion for a Panthers win.

Peterson finished with 102 yards on the ground and 195 yards passing for the game.

Pickford, who had held its previous two opponents two a combined one touchdown, finished with 299 yards of total offense, six fewer than Rudyard. Rudyard turned the ball over three times.

BRITTON DEERFIELD 34, CEDARVILLE 20

Britton Deerfield made the trek from southeast Michigan across the bridge and went home happy after dropping Cedarville from the list of unbeaten teams.

Cedarville turned the ball over seven times against the Patriots, who had 453 yards of total offense, compared to 277 for Cedarville.
