Steve Spurrier given inaugural Nick Saban Legacy Award

Former Florida head coach Steve Spurrier was given the inaugural Nick Saban Legacy Award along with former Grambling State coach Eddie Robinson Monday in Birmingham, Alabama. The award was created to honor coaches who had a long-lasting impact on the game. Saban was there to present the award to Spurrier. Here’s what he had to say about the head ball coach, according to AL.com:

Steve was always an icon in terms of how you scheme offensively and really a great play caller, was really hard to defend because he was really unpredictable — but not unpredictable in a bad way but always well-prepared. And his offensive teams were always well-coached and really hard to defend. And, to be honest with you, we never had a whole lot of success against him if you really want to look at the records. He was someone who I thought I always looked up to in terms of success he had, the program he ran, the things, he did, the relationships he created with players. I had the utmost respect for him and still do.

Spurrier is one of the few coaches Saban struggled against. He never defeated a Florida team led by Spurrier when he coached at LSU. However, Saban fared better when Spurrier became the head coach at South Carolina where he went 1-3 against him with the Tigers and the Crimson Tide.
