State tennis rewind: Doubles leads Holland Christian to fourth; Zeeland West, Hamilton, WO

KALAMAZOO - The Holland Christian boys tennis team has been led by its doubles teams all season.

That continued all the way until the end of the season as three doubles teams reached the state semifinals at the Division 3 state tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Three doubles teams made the state semifinals and led the Maroons to a fourth-place finish as a team with 17 points.

Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood won with 37 points. Zeeland East was tied for 10th with eight points and Hamilton was 13th with seven points. Zeeland East finished 19th with points from its No. 1 singles player, who made it as an individual.

Here is a look at how the local teams fared:

Division 3

Holland Christian

Holland Christian's Simon Langejans and Henry Langejans reached the semifinals at No. 1 doubles.

The Maroons duo had a first-round bye, defeated St. Joseph 6-3, 6-4, then Big Rapids 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

The brothers ended their run in the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Forest Hills Eastern's Devin Kozal and Jace Konwinski, who won the title.

At No. 2 doubles, Tryg Tanis and Tyler Hemmeke had a bye, then defeated Stevensville Lakeshore 6-4, 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals, defeating Forest Hills Eastern 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the semifinals.

In the semis, Tannis and Hemmeke lost a three-setter to East Grand Rapids 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-1,

At No. 3 doubles, Michael Gorno and Graham Tanis had a bye, then beat Petoskey 6-1, 6-0 before topping Chelsea 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

The Maroons duo lost 6-0, 6-1 to Cranbrook Kingswood's Ryan VanDyke and Ben Stevenson in the semifinals, the eventual state champs.

At No. 4 doubles, Gavin Swiftney and Ethan Hemmeke had a first-round ye, then defeated Chelsea 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals, where they were defeated by Detroit Country Day, 6-1, 6-2.

Holland Christian's Dylan Becksvoort had a first-round bye then defeated Forest Hills Eastern's Justin Hunter 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals, where he eas defeated by Cranbrook Kingswood's Caden Che 6-2, 6-2.

At No. 4, Zach Apotheker had a bye, defeated Mason's Jackson Page 6-2, 7-6(2) to reach the quarterfinals where he was defeated by St. Joseph's Eeshaan Ale, 6-1, 6-0.

Holland Christian's Josh Dawson lost to Mason's Jayden Miller 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round at No. 1 singles.

At No. 3 singles, Evan Disselkoen had a bye, then beat Stevensville Lakeshore's Logan Bellinger 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals, where he lost to Cranbrook Kingswood's Jace Bernard, 6-0, 6-0.

Zeeland East

Zeeland East's Brady Schanski had a first-round bye at No. 1 singles. He then defeated Parma Western's Lucas Parrott 6-0, 6-1 to each the quarterfinals where he was defeated by Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood's Ryan Michaels 6-0, 7-6(4).

Zeeland West

Zeeland West's Xander Engelsman had a bye at No. 4 singles, then defeated East Grand Rapids' Henry Seufert 7-6(6), 1-6, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals, where he as defeated by Country Day's Kevin Ye, 6-2, 6-1.

At No. 3 doubles, Mikey Fuller and Dom Szczerowski had a bey, then beat Parma Western 6-1, 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals before falling 6-3, 6-0 to East Grand Rapids.

At No. 4 doubles, Jacob Eckert and Bryce VanWort had a bye, then beat Haslett 7-5, 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals, before losing to Forest Hills Eastern 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 1, Nick Lloyd defeated Avondale's Anish Jain 6-2, 6-4 in the first round before losing to Haslett's Sree Komirisetty 6-1, 6-1 in the second round.

At No. 2, Landen Mosbauer had a bye in the first round, then lost to Gull Lake's Nathan Hubberd 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-2 in the second round.

At No. 3, James Stewart beat Big Rapids' Noah Sweppenheiser 6-1, 6-4 then lost to Country Day's Victor Marin 6-3, 6-4.

At No. 1 doubles, Luke Kaynor and Quinn Willette had a bey then lost 6-3, 6-3 to Stevensville Lakeshore.

At No. 2 doubles, Max Settlemyre and David Hernando-Delgado had a bye then lost to Big Rapids 6-2, 6-3 in the second round.

Hamilton

Hamilton's Marco Catalano had a bye in the first round. He then defeated Forest Hills Eastern's AJ Droog 6-2, 6-3 in the second round before losing in the quarterfinals to St. Joseph's Bhavesh Burramukku, 6-2, 6-2.

Also making the quarterfinals was No. 3 doubles. Josh Bush and Evan Talsma had a bey, then beat DeWitt 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3 before falling to Cranbrook Kingswood 6-1, 6-1 in the quartefinals.

At No. 2, Jackson Miller beat Ypsilanti's Alexander Kuysh 6-1, 6-0 then lost to Haslett's Ian Opel 6-3, 6-3. At No. 3, Seth Lappinga beat Ypsilanti's Ethan Antony 6-2, 6-0 before losing to Chelsea's Jack Murray 6-1, 6-3 in the second round. At No. 4, Dylan Loew lost 6-3, 6-2 to Parma Western's Derek Olivas in the first round.

In doubles, Hamilton's Aiden Hamlin and Reece Carlson lost to Petoskey 6-2, 6-4 in the first round at No. 1. At No. 2, Mitchell Jace and Colin Hamlon lost 6-3, 6-3 to DeWitt in the opening round.

At No. 4 doubles, Grayden Lubbers and James Anderson defeated Petoskey 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 then lost to East Grand Rapids, 6-0, 6-1.

Division 1

West Ottawa

West Ottawa competed at the Division 1 state finals and finished 20th with two points. Bloomfield Hills won the title.

At No. 4 singles, Drew Rothstein defeated Romeo's Gavin Habicht 6-3, 6-4 in the first round before losing to Bloomfield Hills' Zev Spiegel 6-0, 6-1 in the second round.

At No. 1 doubles, West Ottawa's Cody Schurman and Landon Meyer earned a three-set win in the first round, defeating Plymouth 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 before falling to Troy Athens 6-2, 7-6 in the second round.

At No. 1 singles, West Ottawa's Elliot Dozeman lost 6-2, 6-2 to Troy Athens' Rintaro Goda in the first round.

Trevyn Bethke lost 6-1, 6-4 to Rochester Adams' Hardy Chen in the first round at No. 2.

At No. 3, Sebastian Dozeman lost 6-3, 6-2 to Brother Rice's Spencer Seneker in the opening round.

At No. 2 doubles, Brayden Goodwin and Brylan McConnell lost to Okemos in the first round in three sets, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6.

At No. 3 doubles, Justin Heck and Link Taylor lost in three sets to Rochester, 6-7, 7-1, 6-4 in the opening round.

At No. 4 doubles, Hugh Ervine and Luke Koschmann had a bye in the first round, then lost 1-6, 7-6(5), 4-6 to Brother Rice in the second round.
