All-state stat-stuffers and more: Mohawk Valley girls basketball players to watch in 2024

A handful of players have drawn attention to themselves while leading their teams through the 2023 portion of the current girls basketball season. Among them are a handful of retuning all-state honorees.

Ella Trinkaus, So., and Maggie Trinkaus, Sr., Notre Dame

Ella and Maggie, two of the Notre Dame Jugglers' three varsity Trinkaus sisters, were Class B all-state selections by the New York State Sportswriters Association last season. Maggie Trinkaus, now a senior, was a 15th-teamer after receiving honorable mention the year before. Ella Trinkaus, now a sophomore along with twin sister Erin, was picked for the ninth team as a freshman.

With the sisters leading the way, the Jugglers are off to a 7-1 start following a 15-win season that ended with a sectional playoff loss to eventual champion Cortland.

Ella Trinkaus is averaging 25.2 points in the early going. She has been over 20 in each game with a career-high of 31 against Whitesboro.

Maggie Trinkaus is scoring 13.4 points on average and matched her career-high with 23 at Amsterdam in a holiday showcase.

Madison Marusic, Jr., Herkimer

Herkimer Magician Madison Marusic, now a junior, was a 13th-team all-state honoree in Class C after scoring 13.8 points per game last winter.

The fourth-year varsity Magician is again leading the team in scoring at 14.5 points per game. She scored 20 points in the team's final game before the holiday break. She scored her career-high 25 points against Westmoreland last winter.

Marusic has led Herkimer in steals the last two seasons and had 18 in the first six games this season.

Reagan Hope, Jr., Hamilton

As a sophomore, Reagan Hope helped Hamilton endure the loss of Lindsey Speer to a midseason injury and make a run to Section III's championship game against Poland.

Hope, who averaged 9.8 points per game for the season, scored in double figures in 12 of 14 games, 11 of them victories, and averaged 11.4 starting with the game in which Speer went down. For her efforts she was an honorable mention all-state selection in Class D.

She is averaging 8.5 points as a junior and recently put up 39 points in a three-game stretch against Cooperstown, Mt. Markham and Sauquoit Valley, all league rivals in Division II of the Center State Conference.

Lindsey Speer, Sr., and Logan Langel, So., Hamilton

Lindsey Speer averaged 15 points and seven rebounds before an injury ended her junior season at Hamilton and she had started the previous year.

In Speer's absence, Logan Langel stepped up her game as a freshman, scoring what was then a career-high 18 points in the game when her teammate went down and averaging 12.7 points across the second half of the season as the Emerald Knights advanced to Section III's Class D title game.

Both are in the lineup this season and were the top two scorers through the team's 9-0 start with Speer, who had a career-high 30 points against eventual sectional champion Poland in one of her final 2022-23 games, scoring 14.6 points and Langel, whose eventual high was 22 points in a sectional playoff win over West Canada Valley, 13.4.

Each has scored in double figures in all but one game this season.

Madalynne Enos, Jr., Westmoreland

Junior Madalynne Enos is off to a strong start to her junior year, averaging 21.5 points per game and having already reached 1,000 in the fourth year of her varsity career. Enos scored 25 points against Herkimer the night she hit 1,000, and she has two 30-point seasons in the early going, the third and fourth of her varsity career.

Enos leads the 6-2 Bulldogs in scoring, rebounds and three-point baskets. She was also the top scorer the last three seasons.

Alexis Kress, Jr., and Adriana Izzo, Fr., Little Falls

Underclassmen Alexis Kress and Adriana Izzo have been the top two scorers through a 7-0 start by the Little Falls Mounties, separated by two points with each averaging just over 16 per game.

The Mounties are playing in the new Class B this season, the level that saw them win 22 consecutive games to start the season two years ago with Kress, then a freshman, contributing to a veteran squad. Now a junior, Kress is now the most experienced Mountie on a team that includes Izzo in her second varsity season as a freshman. Kress leads the team in rebounds while Izzo leads in assists and steals.

Both players scored 23 points in the Kasner Klassic championship last week. Kress had scored 20 points in a win over Sherburne-Earlville before the holiday break and set her current career-high with 31 against Waterville last year. Izzo had her first 20-point varsity game against Sherburne-Earlville and followed that with 20 more against Canajoharie in the first round of the Kasner Klassic.

Analyce Grabowski, Jr., West Canada Valley

Junior Analyce Grabowski is the leading scorer for West Canada Valley, one of four Section III teams entering 2024 without a loss. A fourth-year varsity Indian-turned-Nighthawk, Grabowski is averaging 18.4 points and set a new career-high with 27 at Dolgeville on Dec. 12.

Maggie Plummer, Jr., Mt. Markham

Junior Maggie Plummer is scoring 18.6 points on average in her second varsity season for Mt. Markham and established a new career-high when she scored 33 with 11 steals against Morrisville-Eaton on Dec. 8. She also had 22 points and 11 rebounds in the season opener against Sherburne-Earlville after recording four double-doubles as a sophomore.

Myah Rainbow, Jr., Oneida

Myah Rainbow has taken an early step forward in her junior season for Oneida. The team's top scorer as a sophomore, her average is up from 10.8 points per game to 15.2 through the first six this season with a new high of 26 against Rome Free Academy.

Izzy Terzioski, Jr., and Avery Rich, Jr., Central Valley Academy

Central Valley Academy got off to a 5-2 start with a roster including only one senior. Juniors Izzy Terzioski and Avery Rich have been the offensive leaders.

Terzioski averages 15.9 points and leads the team with 97 rebounds, 12 blocked shots and 28 steals through eight games, a stretch that has seen her record six consecutive double-doubles with 26 and 25 points in her last two games. She averaged 11.4 points with 11 double-doubles as a sophomore.

Rich is scoring 14.8 points per game and leads the team with 30 assists. Rich had highs of 22 points and eight rebounds against Notre Dame and had seven assists against Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville. Rich averaged 11 points as a sophomore for an 11-11 Thunder.

Haylee Bostwick, So., Rome Free Academy

Sophomore Haylee Bostwick has been the high scorer for Rome Free Academy through a 6-4 start as the Black Knights move on following the graduation of all-state picks Amya McLeod and Alysa Jackson.

Bostwick is averaging 15.6 points and has hit 20 three times during the current five-game win streak following a 1-4 start by the Black Knights. She scored 21 of the 43 points in the win that started the streak against Holland Patent, matching the career-high she set in last year's season-opener.
