Dewey High's Braden Garrison poses after finishing second in the nation in the shot put in the Rising Stars category at a national competition this past winter in Boston.

Following is a roundup of how several area schools fared in last weekend’s state track competition.

DEWEY (Class 4A)

Following a blockbuster offseason of shot put competition, junior Braden Garrison entered this track campaign as one one of the state favorites to win it all.

And, that’s what he did.

Garrison launched a throw of 55-feet-3.5-inches to win by five-plus inches.

He became the first-ever Dewey boys athlete to win the state shot put championship.

Garrison also threw a very respectable 143-plus feet in the discus but that wasn’t enough to put him among the leaders.

Several other Dewey athletes competed in state but none placed in the top 10. This list included Kayah Weathers (girls 100m hurdles), Kyla Overton (girls shot put), Katie Wright (girls shot put) and Keidon Holt (boys 110m hurdles).

CANEY VALLEY (2A)

The Trojans boys showed up very strong — they finished 14th out of 41 teams.

Leading the way was state pole vault champion Cooper Fogle. He cleared the bar at 12-feet-6-inches. He became the first Caney Valley boys state champion in pole vault.

He also helped joined a quality list of area athletes that have won the boys’ pole vault gold the past 30-seasons — Jeremy Ropp (Bartlesville, 1995, 1996), John Brown (Hominy, 2000), Louis Dailey (Hominy, 2003), Chance Herren (Pawhuska, 2005), Luke Christenson (Pawhuska, 2006), Dakota Trumbly (Hominy, 2011, 2012), Timmy Wann (Pawhuska, 2013), Aaron Hunt (Copan, 2018, 2019), Henry Auer (Oklahoma Union, 2021).
