State college football roundup: EMU wallops WMU, 45-23, in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Taylor Powell threw for three touchdowns, Samson Evans ran for three and Jose Ramirez set an Eastern Michigan record for sacks as the Eagles rolled to a 45-23 win over Western Michigan on Saturday.

The win for the Eagles (4-2, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) was their fourth straight in the series (the longest by the Eagles since the teams moved to Division I) and follows a five-game string by the Broncos (2-4, 1-1), the longest in the 57-game series.

Samson opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run and then Powell hit Dylan Drummond with a 2-yard pass to cap an 11-play, 88-yard drive and a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

Samson added TD runs of 1 and 6 yards in the second quarter. Powell found Darius Lassiter for 38 yards in the second, for a 35-7 halftime lead, and Hassan Beydoun in the third.

Ramirez had four of the seven sacks by the defense, which held Western to 91 yards on the ground, just one more yard than Samson had.

Powell was 20-for-30 for 293 yards and Lassiter, a junior college transfer, had his first 100-yard game, getting 104 on six catches.

Jack Salopek threw for two touchdowns for the Broncos but was just 15-for-40 for 208 yards.

Michigan Tech 35, Wayne State 34: Quarterback Will Ark’s 1-yard TD run with 27 seconds remaining gave the host Huskies a homecoming triumph. Ark also completed 22 of 31 passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns for Tech. Myren Harris led the Warriors’ dominant ground attack, which piled up 414 yards, with 36 carries for 295 yards.

Davenport 27, Northern Michigan 24 (OT): Brandon Gielow hit a 36-yard field goal as time expired to sent the game to overtime, then connected on a 27-yarder to give the Panthers a road victory.

Ferris State 33, Saginaw Valley 28: The visiting Bulldogs scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to remain undefeated. The win was No. 1 FSU’s 43rd win in a row, setting a program record. Carson Gulker rushed for a 1-yard touchdown with 1:11 remaining after FSU blew a 20-7 lead, and quarterback Evan Cummins passed for 199 yards and rushed for another 79.

Albion 30, Hope 10: Britons quarterback Jack Bush completed 27 of 39 passes for 347 yards, four touchdowns and an interception, including nine catches for 169 yards and three TDs to Mark Tocco.

Olivet 41, Kalamazoo 17: Nyassinu Crowell Jr. rushed 14 times for 128 yards and two TDs as the host Comets out-rushed the Hornets, 320-43.
