Stashing Noah Syndergaard may pay off big for managers

Mets starter Noah Syndergaard has been progressing well in his rehab, and with a June return in the cards, D.J. Short says patient managers could see their stash pay off in a big way when he returns.

D.J. SHORT: As of this recording, the Mets only have two healthy starters in their rotation-- Marcus Stroman and David Peterson-- but fortunately for them, help is on the way. Noah Syndergaard made his first minor league rehab start on Wednesday as he makes his way back from Tommy John surgery. Pitching for Class A St. Lucie, he tossed four scoreless innings by allowing just one hit and zero walks. He struck out five batters and reportedly topped out in the 95 to 96 mile per hour range with his fastball. Really, you couldn't have asked for a better performance.

Pitchers can spend up to 30 days on a rehab assignment, so Syndergaard should make another couple of starts at least, but a return in the middle of June is realistic at this point. Syndergaard had a frustrating 2019, but he had a 2.93 ERA leading into that year for his career, and he's always posted very strong peripherals. The Mets will be happy to have him back, and those who stashed him in fantasy leagues could get a major boost for the final three or four months.
