Starting 5: U of L field hockey honors, SHA's ZaKiyah Johnson featured in commercial, more

Seven Louisville field hockey players were named to the 2023 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I All-West Region teams. The seven selections are tied for the most in program history.

Senior midfielder Mia Duchars, fifth-year midfielder Emilia Kaczmarczyk and fifth-year defender Julie Kouijzer were named to the first team while senior forward Aimee Plumb, redshirt senior defender India Reed, fifth-year midfielder Minna Tremonti and fifth year goalie Merlijn van der Vegt made the second team.

The Cardinals, who made their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, falling in the quarterfinals, finished the season 15-7 overall and 3-3 in the ACC.

ZaKiyah Johnson, the No. 1 player in Kentucky and No. 5 prospect in the country for the Class of 2025, was recently featured in an Under Armour commercial. Johnson, who received approximately 40 NCAA Division I scholarship offers since her freshman season, listed Louisville among her top 12.

In her junior season, she is looking to lead Sacred Heart to an unprecedented fourth straight state championship. The Valkyries opened their season with a 60-23 win over Southwestern, led by Johnson's game-high 21-point outing.

High school recruiting: Trinity goalie Nick DeGrandi commits to Transylvania

Trinity goalie Nick DeGrandi will continue his lacrosse career in his home state. The senior committed to Division III Transylvania in Lexington.

Although the KHSAA doesn't sanction a lacrosse championship, Trinity has won six state championships playing in the Kentucky Scholastic Lacrosse League. The KHSAA voted to add the sport for 2024-25, pending a final survey.

Performance of the week: Max Green's 48-point outing breaks longtime Oldham County basketball record

Max Green's 48 points in Oldham County's 89-76 season-opening win over North Hardin broke a 43-year-old record. The school's single-game record for most points in a game was previously 45, set by Curt Robertson.

Green, a Holy Cross signee, went 13-for-17 from the field (6-for-12 from 3), knocked down all four of his free throw attempts and grabbed five rebounds during the record-setting showing.

  • Bellarmine women's basketball is hosting Purdue Fort Wayne on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and Asbury on Saturday at 1 p.m.

  • The Bellarmine men will face Boyce College at 11 a.m. on Monday and Berea College at 11 a.m. on Thursday. Both games will be played at Freedom Hall.

Play of the week: Haley Harrison knocks down clutch free throw to help Bellarmine women's basketball record first win

Clutch free-throw shooting helped Bellarmine women's basketball win its first game of the season on Wednesday. Redshirt junior Hayley Harrison knocked down 1 of 2 from the charity stripe to give the Knights a three-point advantage over Evansville with seven seconds remaining in the game en route to the 64-58 victory.

Harrison finished the game with seven points and two rebounds.
