Stan Savran, Miami University grad and longtime Pittsburgh sports personality, dies at 76
Longtime Pittsburgh radio and TV personality Stan Savran, a Miami University graduate, died Monday at age 76, family members confirmed. He had been diagnosed with lung cancer several months ago.
Born Stanley Savransky in Cleveland, he went to Oxford, Ohio, to pursue a degree in education, aspiring to be a teacher and coach after playing four sports at Mayfield High School, east of Cleveland.
"Savran on Sportsbeat," the show he hosted (and originally co-hosted with Guy Junker) from 1992 to 2009 on Fox Sports Pittsburgh, was the longest-running sports show in Pittsburgh TV history.
"Today is a sad day in the City of Pittsburgh as we lost a legendary person, media icon, and close friend with the passing of Stan Savran," Steelers President Art Rooney II said in a statement. "He was a gentleman in every way possible, and he did so much for our city and Western Pa. with his honest candor and knowledge of all sports, both locally and nationally. Stan was involved for many years working on our Steelers Radio Network as well as doing several Steelers' interviews and shows, while also being a valuable contributor to our Hall of Honor committee. Our thoughts and prayers are with his entire family during this difficult time. He was truly one of a kind and will be missed, but always remembered."
Social media reactions to Savran's broadcasting legacy:

Stan Savran was so appreciative that I took this photo of him interviewing Mario Lemieux.
We lost a sportscasting legend in Stan, who shared his love and passion for Pittsburgh sports on air.
And he was even better in person.
Stan, we didn’t just love the show.
We loved you. pic.twitter.com/ctgI03DrlY— Kevin Gorman (@KevinGormanPGH) June 13, 2023
Another Pittsburgh media giant lost, & a great guy to boot. His fans loved him and so did all of us in the business. Stan Savran upheld the highest form of journalism - he reported fairly, held those accountable, and told it all in an entertaining way. I was thrilled to know him https://t.co/JHWH8wIg8y

Stan Savran worked until the very last day he could. If he couldn't host/be on TV, then he'd call in. Just because he wanted to. Because he enjoyed it. Everyday. He really liked talking with every single listener/viewer. Stan, we all loved the show... and everyone loved you.

When I was an intern at FSN Pittsburgh I was so nervous to run the teleprompter. Stan told me not to worry because he didn’t use it anyways. He was just having a conversation with his audience - the absolute best and true professional. Pittsburgh will miss you 💔 #LoveTheShow

Stan Savran was more than a Pittsburgh sports media legend. He was a willing mentor to so many (including me) and a true professional who was admired and revered by fans, fellow journalists and athletes alike. We always “loved the show.” RIP to the “Godfather.”
