STAC softball final set: It’ll be unbeaten, top-ranked Vestal against Corning on Monday

Unbeaten Vestal will visit Corning at 5 p.m. Monday to decide the Southern Tier Athletic Conference’s softball championship.

In Saturday’s semifinals at Chenango Valley, the Golden Bears – 17-0 and ranked No. 1 in Class AA by the New York State Sports Writers Association – were 3-0 winners over the host Warriors and Corning poured it on late to defeat Susquehanna Valley, 10-4.

The first game brought Vestal pitcher Reilly Storer a two-hitter with nine strikeouts – the latter enabling her to reach 100 for the season – and one walk. Aubrey Rogers was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Caitlyn Petteys homered.

Chenango Valley is 10-7.

Corning (10-5) received highly beneficial two-way production from Matti Johnston in a game that was tied at 3 through five innings. She pitched the distance, permitting five hits and a single earned run while striking out nine and walking three. At the plate, Johnston doubled twice in a 2-for-5 showing with two runs.

The Hawks' Lauren DeRosa tripled and drove in a pair, and Emelia Smith had two RBI. DeRosa’s three-bagger broke that sixth-inning tie and she was singled home by Smith to make it 5-3.

Susquehanna Valley (16-3) had five players with a hit apiece.
