St. Ed's advances in SSAA playoffs, Jensen Beach, Master's Academy post wins

Nate Sparkman threw two touchdown passes and the Pirate defense had to grind out a second-half performance as St. Edward's advanced to the second round of the SSAA 4A playoffs.

Palm Beach Christian Prep was first to come up with big plays early as an interception led to a touchdown run by quarterback Grant Turner to give the Saints a 6-0 lead with 3:33 left in the first quarter.

Sparkman would hit Connor O'Brien on an 8-yard touchdown connection early in the second quarter and the Pirates (4-5) added to their lead shortly after as Sparkman hit Nicky Colontrelle on a 5-yard touchdown pass that would give St. Edward's a 14-6 halftime lead.

Late in the third quarter, Turner threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Ferdinand but the Pirates were able to hold on a potential tying two-point conversion try that loomed large in the final minutes.

With St. Edward's trying to chew up the clock, Sparkman hit Pat McMullan on a 37-yard completion on a third-and-3 with under two minutes to go that effectively sealed the win for the Pirates.

McMullan had missed the previous two games for St. Edward's but had a huge impact Thursday with three sacks on defense and the key catch on offense to secure the victory.

“We haven’t had Pat for a couple weeks due to a shoulder injury, we missed him, we didn’t know what we were going to get level wise from him coming back tonight but he stepped up huge tonight especially putting the game away on that play,” Pirate head coach Rich Schofield said.

St. Edward's will await to see their next opponent in the semifinals as Out-of-Door Academy and All Saints Academy will play their quarterfinal on Friday night.

Schofield was happy to see his kids dig deep to get past an opponent that gave the Pirates all they could handle Thursday.

“We knew they were a good, super athletic team," Schofield said. "It was going to be a handful to slow them down. Offensively, we got off to a good start but sputtered a bit as we went along which we'll work on going into next week but we’re excited for the next opportunity next week.”

Senior Dylan Fatovich opened the scoring on the night for Jensen Beach returning a punt for a touchdown and classmate Elvick Previlma added a 51-yard touchdown catch from Ahern in the third quarter for the Falcons.
