Spurs' Aldridge (knee) set for MRI on Wednesday

Already down one All-Star, the San Antonio Spurs lost forward LaMarcus Aldridge with what the team called a left knee contusion in the second quarter of their Tuesday night loss to the Washington Wizards.

Aldridge was leading with Spurs with 13 points when he limped off the court late in the first half of the 116-106 defeat. He did not return.

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich told reporters afterward that the six-time All-Star would undergo an MRI exam Wednesday morning.

Aldridge, 32, had been carrying the Spurs in the absence of All-Star teammate Kawhi Leonard, who has played just nine games this season because of an injured quadriceps muscle.

Aldridge is averaging a team-high 23.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per game this season. It is the first season since he joined the Spurs in 2015 that he has averaged more than 20 points after five straight seasons of 20-ppg production with the Portland Trail Blazers from 2010-15.

The Spurs, battling in a tightly packed Western Conference playoff hunt, play host to Oklahoma City on Thursday and Houston on Sunday, followed by road games in Los Angeles against the Clippers and Lakers on April 3 and 4, respectively.
