Springtown steamrolls Hirschi in fourth quarter for 42-14 win

It was a frustrating night for Hirschi.

And a two-hour and 32-minute delay for lightning was just the beginning of those frustrations.

Springtown consistently flustered the Huskies, whose own mistakes added to the predicament, and the Porcupines earned their first win of the season, 42-14, at Memorial Stadium. Hirschi slipped to 1-2.

“It was very frustrating,” Hirschi coach Lawrence Johnson said. “It just seemed like we were on the verge of making something positive happen, and then a self-inflicted wound, you know a mistake, would just take that momentum away.”

Springtown never trailed in the game, using a run-heavy offense that churned out 339 rushing yards. Meanwhile, the Porcupines attacking defense made it difficult for the Huskies to consistently move the ball. Hirschi finished with 244 total yards.

But Springtown’s lead was just 21-14 late in the third quarter after the Huskies got a 17-yard TD run by KD Worthy.

On the first play of Springtown’s ensuing drive, quarterback Hudson Hulett threw a pass under pressure right into the arms of Hirschi senior Javian Frazier. But Frazier had the ball pop out of his grasp during the return, and the Porcupines recovered.

A penalty pushed Springtown back to its own 8, but the Porcupines embarked on a 92-yard drive, capped by a 5-yard run by Hulett, that served as the beginning of the end for the Huskies.

Springtown added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter with the Huskies failing to get a first down on their three possessions in the final 12 minutes. The Huskies managed just 99 rushing yards with much of it coming on scrambles by quarterback Jimmell McFalls, who rushed for 51 yards and passed for 142 yards.

Johnson took much of the blame on himself and the coaching staff.

“It starts with the coaches, man. We did a bad job of getting our kids prepared,” Johnson said. “We got to help our kids fight adversity and handle hard times better. We’re looking in the mirror at ourselves. Give credit to Springtown. They were more physical and more aggressive at the point of attack, but we can’t keep making these kinds of mistakes and expect to win.”
