Riverheads girls, boys tennis win

Riverheads girls tennis edged Stuarts Draft 5-4 Monday. Ailena Kwieciniski, Taia Chandler and Madison Catlett all won singles matches for the Gladiators to send the match into doubles even 3-3. Draft's Rachel Liu and Abby Piner won No. 1 doubles, but Riverheads swept the other two doubles matches for the win. Brenna Collins teamed with Chandler to win 8-5 while Ashlyn Almarode and Catlett won 8-1 to put Riverheads over the top.

In boys tennis, Riverheads beat Draft 8-1. Colby Cash, Adam Higgins, Ethan Eppard, Luke Bryant and Cayden Cook-Cash all won singles matches and Riverheads swept the doubles for the win.

Patterson's 3 RBIs lead Bison to win

Buffalo Gap beat Covington 9-3 in softball Wednesday night. Gap improved to 9-3 on the season with the win. Caroline Alger pitched a complete game, allowing three hits and striking out 13. Alger also had four hits in the win. Sadie Patterson knocked in three runs for the Bison on a pair of hits.

In baseball, Buffalo Gap beat Covington 11-0 while Riverheads edged Harrisonburg 8-7. Waynesboro's girls soccer team blanked Harrisonburg 1-0.

Riverheads tennis wins; Fort boys soccer holding 'Paint the Coach's Van' fundraiser

Riverheads girls tennis beat Bath County 6-3 Tuesday night. Singles winners for the Gladiators were Ailena Kwieciniski, Brenna Collins, Taia Chandler and Madison Catlett. Kwieciniski and Chandler teamed up for a doubles win as did Ashlyn Almarode and Catlett for the final margin of victory.

Also, this Saturday from 4-8 p.m. Fort Defiance boys soccer is holding a fundraiser at Waynesboro's Plaza Antigua. The team will receive 20% of sales during that timeframe. Also, everybody that comes to the restaurant during that time will have a chance to spray paint Coach Marcel Ciascai's van. Fort's soccer players will be there painting the van as well. Ciascai said he plans to drive the van to school like that for the rest of the year.

Alger strikes out 12, gets pair of hits in Buffalo Gap softball win

Behind 12 strikeouts from pitcher Caroline Alger and a home run from Bailey Talley, Buffalo Gap softball beat Covington 11-2 Monday night. Eight different Bison had hits in the win, including multiple hits from Alger and Talley. A five-run third inning for Gap broke open the game.

In girls tennis, Waynesboro beat Buffalo Gap 8-1. Singles winners for the Little Giants were Heather Morris, Natalie Reed, Emely Silva, Kira Doyne and Gillian Matherly. Morris/Reed, Silva/Doyne and Addison Copeland/Matherly teamed up as Waynesboro swept the doubles matches.

Riverheads girls tennis got past Wilson Memorial 6-3. Singles winners for the Gladiators were Ailena Kwieciniski, Makarah Hollinger, Brenna Collins, Taia Chandler and Ashlyn Almarode. Chandler and Collins got the doubles win for Riverheads.

Also in girls tennis, Stuarts Draft slipped past Staunton 5-4.

In boys tennis, Wilson Memorial edged Riverheads 5-4. Staunton beat Stuarts Draft 8-1. Waynesboro beat Buffalo Gap 9-0.

Buffalo Gap baseball beat Covington 14-5.

In boys soccer, Wilson Memorial fell to Monticello 2-0 in overtime. Wilson Memorial's girls soccer team topped Monticello 2-1. Staunton girls soccer beat Stuarts Draft 3-1.

Adam Groves helps Waynesboro boys track to win; Waynesboro's JJ Redifer wins gold in four girls events

Waynesboro won the boys track meet Wednesday at Waynesboro High School, outscoring second-place Stuarts Draft 114.5 to 97. The Fort Defiance girls also won, edging Waynesboro 110-103.

The Waynesboro boys took first place in the 4x800 relay (Adam Groves, Grayson Norris, Dylan Colander, Miles Jolin). They also got several individual first-place finishes: Qua'ran Patterson (110 hurdles), Amari Carter (100-meter dash), Adam Groves (1600-meter run), Gage Groves (800-meter run), and Trent Snyder (pole vault).

Waynesboro's JJ Redifer won first on the girls side in four events: 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, long jump and triple jump. She was also second in the 100-meter dash and third in the pole vault.

Also Wednesday night, Riverheads girls tennis beat Stuarts Draft 7-2. Ailena Kwieciniski, Taia Chandler, Madison Catlett and Ashlyn Almarode all won singles matches for the Gladiators, which also swept the doubles matches.

Per @shenbaseball7 on Twitter, Buffalo Gap beat Nelson County 12-7 and Staunton fell to Mountain View 13-11.

Buffalo Gap softball beat Nelson 10-0 Wednesday. Hannah Coffman ended the game with a 6th-inning RBI.

Bottenfield's homer powers Riverheads past Fort Defiance softball

Riverheads softball edged Fort Defiance 9-7 in extra innings Tuesday night. Cheyenne Bottenfield had a two-run home run and three RBIs in the win, while Olivia Lyszaz finished the night 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Ella Galford and Destiny Good both had three hits also, while Maggie Robertson was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the Gladiators victory. Good pitched eight innings, striking out nine and walking four.

Also in Shenandoah District softball, Wilson Memorial topped Buffalo Gap 3-1. Wilson's Kailyn Ketchum hit a solo homer while Caylee Stevens got the victory in the circle for the Hornets. Jayden Glass's run-scoring single in the fourth inning proved to be the game winner. Madeline Miller had three hits for Gap in the loss.

Riverheads boys soccer fell to Fort Defiance 5-2. Riverheads' Caleb McClanahan scored on two penalty kicks for the Gladiator's only two goals.

In girls soccer, Riverheads and Fort tied 1-1 in double overtime. Ella Arehart scored in the final minute of regular time fo the Gladiators. Riverheads' Mackenzie Roller had 11 saves.

In baseball, per @shenbaseball7 on Twitter, Waynesboro beat Stuarts Draft 13-3, Riverheads topped Fort Defiance 13-1, and Buffalo Gap slipped past Wilson Memorial 4-3. Micah Canterbury's two-run homer was the difference for the Bison.

Talley powers Buffalo Gap past Fort Defiance softball Tuesday

Bailey Talley had a home run, one of three hits on the night for the junior as Buffalo Gap beat Fort Defiance 5-0 Tuesday in softball. Madeline Miller and Jasmine Harris both added hits and runs in the win while Sadie Patterson walked and scored for the Bison in the win.

Gap's Caroline Alger pitched a complete game shutout, giving up just two hits and striking out nine.

Stuarts Draft's McKenzie Tillman gave up just four hits in the Cougars 1-0 softball win over Riverheads. The Gladiators' Destiny Good allowed just two hits, but had three walks. A crucial Riverheads error in the fifth inning allowed the only Draft run of the game.

Stuarts Draft beat Riverheads 2-0 in boys soccer. Stuarts Draft's girls soccer team beat Riverheads 3-1.

In baseball, Stuarts Draft beat Riverheads 12-0. Wilson Memorial topped Staunton 14-3 behind Ryan McDaniel's pitching performance. Buffalo Gap beat Fort Defiance 21-15 and Waynesboro fell to Fluvanna 5-2.

Fernandez leads Riverheads girls soccer; Knight scores goal and assist in Wilson soccer win

Ysabel Fernandez scored five goals in Riverheads' 8-0 win over Bath County Thursday night. Ella Arehart added a pair of goals while Mara Cypher also scored in the win.

Wilson Memorial beat Monticello 3-1 in girls soccer. Wilson scored goals by Adelie Condra on an assist by Asia Knight before Knight scored with an assist from Hailey Flint. The Hornets' final goal came from Logan Hoover on a Carley Piller assist. Wilson's Kayla Karnes had four saves in goal.

Also in girls soccer Stuarts Draft beat Alleghany 9-1 and Turner Ashby stopped Fort Defiance 3-1. Wilson boys soccer lost to Monticello 2-1. Turner Ashby beat Fort Defiance 5-0.

Spotswood softball beat Wilson Memorial 14-3 while Fort lost to Turner Ashby 8-0.

In boys tennis Thursday, Staunton beat Rockbridge County 5-4, while Monticello edged Wilson 5-4. Waynesboro beat Stuarts Draft 7-2. Fort fell to Turner Ashby 8-1. In girls tennis, Waynesboro beat Stuarts Draft 8-1. Turner Ashby beat Fort Defiance 9-0. Wilson lost to Monticello 9-0.

In Thursday baseball, per @shenbaseball7 on Twitter, Stuarts Draft beat Charlottesville 11-1, Wilson Memorial knocked off Spotswood 5-2 and Turner Ashby beat Fort Defiance 12-5.

Alger, Talley power Buffalo Gap softball; Riverheads tennis wins

Buffalo Gap softball beat Mountain View 15-0 Wednesday. Pitcher Caroline Alger recorded 11 strikeouts in a no-hit performance for the Bison. Allee Holden had four RBIs in the win, while Bailey Talley and Sadie Patterson had three RBIs each for Gap. Talley added a 3-run home run in the win.

Buffalo Gap baseball beat Mountain View 12-4 behind a 15-strikeout effort from pitcher Micah Canterbury. Kasey Fitzgerald had three hits in the win.

Waynesboro girls soccer blanked Spotswood 2-0.

Riverheads boys tennis beat Strasburg 9-0 Wednesday to improve to 3-0 on the season. Cayden Swats, Ethan Eppard, Colby Cash, Mason Mays, Adam Higgins and Luke Bryant swept the singles portion of the match before Riverheads doubles teams completed the shutout.

The Riverheads girls tennis team also won, beating Mountain View 8-1. Singles winners were Makarah Hollinger, Brenna Collins, Taia Chandler, Madison Catlett and Ashlyn Almarode. Riverheads swept the doubles also.

Fernandez's hat trick leads Riverheads girls soccer, Wilson's Knight scores twice

Riverheads beat James River 5-3 in girls soccer Tuesday. The match was tied at 3-3 before Riverheads' Ysabel Fernandez and Jaden Wright scored in the last five minutes of the game. Fernandez earned a hat trick on the night while Anna Shirley, in her first year playing, got her first goal of the season in the win.

Also in girls soccer, Wilson Memorial beat Spotswood 2-0. Asia Knight scored both goals for the Hornets on assists by Logan Hoover. Kayla Karnes recorded the shutout in goal for Wilson.

James River beat Riverheads 6-3 Tuesday in boys soccer. Pablo Chavez, Kyle Miles and Davian Moats all scored goals for the Gladiators, while Chavez and Zac Brooks added assists in the loss. Nathan Butler had 18 saves for Riverheads.

Fort Defiance lost to Rockbridge 3-1 and Spotswood beat Wilson Memorial 2-0 in boys soccer.

Buffalo Gap’s co-ed soccer team fell in their home opener, losing 5-1 to the Covington Boy’s Home. Karina Bondaruk had the only goal for the Bison. Blake Hohenstein collected 13 saves in the losing effort.

In baseball, per @shenbaseball7 on Twitter, Wilson Memorial beat Monticello 13-3, Charlottesville topped Staunton 5-4, James River doubled up Waynesboro 6-3 and Fort Defiance beat Rockbridge 16-7.

Monticello softball beat Wilson 4-0.

Robertson powers Riverheads softball to win; Gladiators boys tennis and soccer also win

Maggie Robertson went 4-for-4 with a home run and six RBIs to help lead Riverheads softball over Covington 13-3 Monday night. The Gladiators improved to 3-0 on the season.

Montana Deming finished with a pair of hits, including a triple, and two RBIs in the win, while Whitney Abshire was 3-for-4 with a homer. Destiny Good pitched another solid game scattering six hits striking out eight for the win

Staunton beat Riverheads 5-4 in girls tennis to improve to 2-1 on the season. Staunton got singles wins from Felicity Jones, Susannah Blanchard and Lexi Harris.

The Riverheads boys tennis team beat Staunton 6-3 behind singles wins from Cayden Swats, Colby Cash, Mason Mays and Adam Higgins. Swats and Higgins also teamed up for a Riverheads' doubles win as did Mays and Luke Bryant. The Gladiators are now 2-0.

Riverheads boys soccer beat Covington 8-0. The game was called at the 60th minute due to score. Pablo Chavez and Kyle Miles had three goals apiece. Chavez also had a pair of assists, as did Zac Brooks for the Gladiators. Riverheads improved to 2-0.

Staunton, Fort boys soccer get wins; Riverheads softball wins opener

Staunton beat Rockbridge 7-0 in boys soccer Friday night. Ashton Barrett and Marc Geffrard both scored a pair of goals and William Cormier added two assists for the Storm in the win. Five players connected on goals for Staunton in the win.

Freshman Stuart Love was in goal, recording three saves in the Staunton victory.

“I’m very proud of our guys," Staunton coach Eric Janovsky said. "They have been training hard the last few weeks. It’s a great result to start the season.”

Last Thursday, Fort Defiance also beat Rockbridge in boys soccer, winning 2-0 with Christian Coreea and Henry Gutshall both scoring goals. Misha Tymoshchuk and Dylan Shifflett both had assists for Fort.

In softball Thursday, Riverheads beat Covington 5-0 with all five runs coming in a sixth inning. Cheyenne Bottenfield Destiny Good, Ella Galford and Kallie Poole all had run-scoring singles, while Whitney Abshire had an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Good pitched a shutout, facing 24 batters and striking out 11 of them with no walks for the Gladiators.
