Sprague hires Churchill's AJ Robinson as head football coach
Sprague High School has hired AJ Robinson as its new head football coach, the school announced Thursday night.
Robinson previously spent six seasons at Churchill High School in Eugene, where he was their league coach of the year twice.
Robinson takes over for Jay Minyard, who will be leaving Sprague to become the athletic director at South Albany High School.
“It was abundantly clear to our committee that Coach Robinson is the right person to lead our program,” Sprague athletic director Clinton Gertenrich said in the release. “With his combination of valuing character development and leadership, combined with an emphasis on athletic and academic excellence, he will have an instant impact on developing quality relationships with players and adults that surround our program.”
Sprague went 6-5 overall last season and made it to the OSAA Class 6A Columbia Cup quarterfinals.
Robinson was Churchill’s head coach from 2016-21, where he had a 36-21 overall record, including reaching the OSAA Class 5A state championship game in 2017. He spent 2022 as Springfield’s offensive coordinator.
He was their league coach of the year in 2017 and 2018, when the team went 21-3 combined, and he was the playcaller of the two highest-scoring offenses in league history, when they averaged 50.1 and 48.6 points per game.
“I am honored to serve as the head football coach for the Sprague football family,” Robinson said. “Sprague is an outstanding school that has championship tradition. We will build on the solid foundation that already exists and grow the program to a level that our community will be proud of.”
