Sprague girls tennis places fourth at OSAA 6A state tournament
After winning the district tournament in dominant fashion last week, the Sprague girls tennis team delivered a well-rounded performance at the OSAA state tournament this weekend to take home some hardware.
The Olympians five star participants racked up a combined 10 points to earn a fourth-place finish among 6A schools on Saturday. They had more participants than any team in the tournament.
Jesuit won the girls team title with 16 points, South Salem finished 11th with four points, and McNary scored half of a point to finish 25th.
On the boys side, Sprague also led all 6A schools with five participants and tallied two points to earn a 14th place finish.
Here is a roundup of how Salem-area tennis players fared at state this weekend.
6A girls singles
Sprague's Tirzah Tarbox advanced to the state quarterfinals before falling 6-0, 6-0 to eventual state champion Lauren Han of Clackamas.
South Salem's Sadie Paterson advanced to the second round before falling 6-1, 6-1 to South Medford's Alexis Uschold.
Sprague's Hannah Bradshaw lost her opening match 6-0, 6-1 to South Medford's Alexis Uschold.
McNary's Nicole Schnurbusch lost her opening match but then bounced back to reach the consolation bracket semifinals.
6A girls doubles
Sprague's Anna Ainsworth and Drew Fiskum advanced to the quarterfinals before falling 6-2, 6-1 to Westview's Tessa Rozendal and Malavika Rahul.
Sprague's Reese Beyrouty and Elisabeth Nickel lost their opening matchup, but bounced back and topped Roseburg's Kamryn Wattman and Addison Roberts to win the girls consolation final.
South Salem's Andria Yao and Nidhi Nagaraj won their opening match but were ousted by Jesuit's Kate Paine and Kitty Ayotte in the second round, 7-5, 6-3.
Sprague's Mae Warner and Anna Warner lost their opening matchup, then proceeded to advance to the consolation quarterfinals before falling to Sherwood's Cassia Maciejewski and Anna Kang.
6A boys singles
Sprague's Jabin Barkes lost his first-round matchup to South Eugene's Yehuda Zaretsky 6-4, 6-1.
Sprague's Jett Basl lost his first-round matchup to South Eugene's Blake Chandler 6-0, 6-0. He then won his first consolation matchup before falling to Central Catholic's Prince Crimon in the consolation quarterfinals.
South Salem's Noah Leichty lost his first-round draw to Lake Oswego's Mason Men 6-0, 6-1.
Sprague's Tait Pederson lost in the first round, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5, to Glencoe's Liam Mackura.
6A boys doubles
Sprague's Lincoln Basl and Jacob Hoda ran the table in the consolation bracket to beat Grant's Rafael Valverde and Alex Tadjedin, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, to win the boys consolation final.
McNary's Kelson Whelan and Jack Roth lost their opening round to Grant's Ty Hendrickson and Oliver Kuerbis 6-2, 6-3.
Sprague's Mason Marsden and Camden Ayres lost their first round matchup and then won their consolation bracket opener before falling to Roseburg's Massimo Falleni and Esteban Webber-Bernal in the consolation quarterfinals.
South Salem's Lucas Westfall and Alex Cunningham lost their first-round matchup and then won in the first round of the consolation bracket. They fell in the consolation quarterfinals to South Eugene's Malachi Alrahmani and Benjamin Butler.
5A girls singles
After a first-round loss, Silverton's Audrey Gardner advanced to the consolation semifinals before falling to Summit's Matilda Morgan.
5A boys singles
Central's Hannes Zum Felde bounced back from a first-round loss and advanced to the consolation bracket final, where he fell 6-1, 6-0 to Centennial's Brandon Vu.
4A/3A/2A/1A girls singles
Stayton's Laina Atiyeh lost her opening-round matchup, 6-2, 6-2 to Oregon Episcopal's Ella Li.
4A/3A/2A/1A girls doubles
Cascade's Rachel Suelzle and Kate Withers advanced to the second round before falling to Vale's Elise Seals and Ellie Seals 6-1, 6-2.
