Southern Miss football to hire Western Kentucky's Micheal Spurlock as RB coach | Report
Southern Miss football will have a new running backs coach for the 2024 season.
Micheal Spurlock will be in charge of the group, per a 247Sports report Wednesday night. He was the wide receivers coach at Western Kentucky for the 2023 season.
A native of Indianola, Mississippi, Spurlock played at Ole Miss, first as a quarterback before converting to running back. He went undrafted but played in the NFL from 2006 to 2014 for seven teams.
Spurlock broke into the coaching ranks as an assistant high school coach in 2015. He has two years of NFL experience as a special teams assistant with the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers. He also has held various jobs in the college game, including working as a senior analyst at Ole Miss in 2020 and 2021.
Greg Meyer currently holds the title as Southern Miss’ running backs coach, and he also is the special teams coordinator. It is not known if he will be retained.
Jordy Joseph was the Golden Eagles’ running backs coach in 2021 and '22, but he became the quarterbacks coach in 2023. He is leaving Southern Miss to become the running backs coach at Houston.
Spurlock will inherit a running backs room that is beginning a new chapter without Frank Gore Jr., the program's third all-time career rusher. He declared for the 2024 NFL Draft at the beginning of December. However, the 2023 season's second-leading rusher, Dreke Clark, is returning, and the Golden Eagles have a handful of young talent that are expected to take an elevated role.

Spurlock will be Southern Miss’ third addition to the coaching staff, joining offensive coordinator Chip Long and defensive coordinator Clay Bignell.
Southern Miss has two more open coaching spots to fill.
