Southern Miss baseball adds Eastern Connecticut State transfer Billy Oldham

HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss baseball has signed Eastern Connecticut State transfer pitcher Billy Oldham, according to USM head coach Scott Berry.

The addition was first reported by Pine Belt News.

Oldham is fresh off winning the NCAA Division III National Championship in his third season with the Warriors.

He started 15 games for Eastern Connecticut State during the title-winning campaign, pitching to a 2.58 ERA.

Oldham struck out 120 batters in 96 innings, walking 24 hitters and limiting opponents to a .217 batting average.

Berry noted that he and pitching coach Christian Ostrander liked Oldham's ability to fill up the zone when he watched his film.

Southern Miss came across Oldham thanks to a reference from current bullpen arm Isaiah Rhodes. The two played together with the Vermont Lake Monsters of the FCBL last summer.

One of the assistant coaches on that Vermont Lake Monsters squad, Matt Fincher, coached with Berry in the Jayhawk League back in 1988. Fincher provided another strong recommendation for Berry.

He's an important addition for the Golden Eagles, who lost two of their three weekend starters this offseason and saw five of their bullpen arms taken in the MLB Draft earlier this week.
