South Korea conceded a late equaliser in the 15th minute of stoppage time as a 3-3 Asian Cup draw with Malaysia saw them finish second in Group E behind Bahrain. They will now face either Thailand or Saudi Arabia in their round of 16 match, but they could have finished top if they had defended Malaysia’s counter-attacks better in Al-Wakrah.
South Korea took the lead midway through the first half when Woo-yeong Jeong’s header was shown by VAR replays to have crossed the line before goalkeeper Syihan Hazmi clawed it away. Malaysia hit back with two goals in 11 minutes. First, Faisal Halim fooled the South Korean defence into thinking he was about to cross before clipping smartly into the unguarded net. Then 21-year-old Arif Aiman was fouled in the box and coolly slotted his penalty into the corner, sending goalkeeper Hyeon-woo Jo the wrong way.
But there was bad luck for Malaysia when Kang-in Lee scored a free-kick which went down as an own-goal after initially hitting the crossbar before deflecting in off Hazmi. Tottenham captain Heung-min Son beat Hazmi with a penalty early in stoppage time, which South Korea thought would earn them victory and top spot in Group E. But the match had one final twist in store, when substitute Romel Morales controlled excellently and fired into the corner to give Malaysia their first and only point of the 2023 Asian Cup, demoting South Korea to second in Group, which Bahrain won by beating Jordan 1-0.

Jurgen Klinsmann has lauded Malaysia for improving from their opening-day performance last time out.
"They learned a lot from the first game [a 4-0 defeat to Jordan] and played much, much better in the second game [a 1-0 loss to Bahrain)]", said Klinsmann.
"We expect a very difficult game tomorrow against Malaysia. Whoever comes after that, it's not important today. We can talk about that tomorrow night after the game.

Jurgen Klinsmann yesterday rubbished speculation that South Korea were looking to avoid facing Japan in the last 16.
"We don't want to avoid anybody," he told reporters at his pre-match press conference in Doha.
"We want to go from game to game, and respect the next opponent."
Klinsmann added: "It doesn't matter when you meet certain countries.
"They're all very good. They're all motivated, they all fight and they're all emotional."
South Korea could face Japan in huge last-16 showdown

As mentioned, South Korea pipping Jordan to top spot in Group E today would tee up a massive showdown with rivals Japan in the last 16 in Doha next Wednesday.
That is because Japan surprisingly only managed to finish as runners-up in Group D, sandwiching wins over Vietnam and Indonesia with a shock loss to eventual table-toppers Iraq in Al Rayyan last Friday.
Meanwhile, the runners-up in Group E are scheduled to face the winners of Group F in Al Rayyan on Tuesday.
As it stands that would be Saudi Arabia, though Roberto Mancini's side need to avoid defeat by closest challengers Thailand later this evening in order to seal first place.
The third-place team from Group E would take on either Iraq or hosts Qatar - winners of Group A - next.

South Korea need just a point today to make sure of their place in the last 16 of the Asian Cup, while they will need to better Jordan's result or else produce a margin of victory that is three goals greater than their rivals' in order to snatch top spot.
Per ESPN, it would take an unlikely sequence of events for them to drop down to third - they would need to lose to Malaysia with Jordan also being thumped by Bahrain.
But in a curious quirk of fate, winning the group would probably secure a much harder and higher-profile first knockout test for South Korea than if they were to hold on to second place. More on that in a moment.
Malaysia, meanwhile, cannot hope to reach the last 16 after back-to-back losses and will stay fourth whatever happens today, unable to overtake Bahrain due to head to head record (not to mention a -5 goal difference).
