South Jersey Mean 15 softball rankings for second week of May

The scholastic softball regular season is heading down the stretch.

As some teams continue the quest for conference titles, others are battling for postseason position.

Here's a look at the top teams in South Jersey.

Mean 15 rankings

  1. Kingsway (18-2, last week’s ranking: 1). The Dragons finished second at the South Jersey Classic, dropping a 5-2 decision in the final to Donovan Catholic. The team is averaging 7.8 runs per game. Junior Olivia Sciulli has posted 22 hits, 20 runs scored and nine stolen bases out of the leadoff spot.

  2. Vineland (18-1, 2). The Fighting Clan boast the longest current winning streak in South Jersey at 14. The team has recorded 198 hits over its first 19 games. Senior Gyanna Porreca has contributed 25 hits and 11 walks.

  3. Northern Burlington (16-3, 5). The Greyhounds clinched the Burlington County Scholastic League Liberty Division with a 2-0 win over Burlington Township on May 6. The team has won its last six games in a row. Freshman Haley MacArthur is batting .444 with 28 hits and 25 stolen bases.

  4. St. Joseph (15-6, 6). After a one-run loss to No. 1 Kingsway, the Wildcats rebounded with wins over Hightstown and Paul VI to earn a third-place finish at its South Jersey Classic last weekend. Sophomore Alaina Dorsey has stuffed the stat sheet, including a team-best 32 hits, 23 runs scored and 23 stolen bases. She’s batting .508 with nine extra-base hits.

  5. Paul VI (15-8, 7). The Eagles went 1-2 at the South Jersey Classic, but the win was a big one with a 5-3 victory over Egg Harbor Township. The team is one of the top hitting squads in the region, averaging 8.2 runs and 11.6 hits per game. Lisey St. Jean (42 hits), Danielle Audet (39), Morgan Chambers (33) and Camryn Harry (32) are the hit leaders on the club.

  6. Egg Harbor Township (12-8, 4). The Eagles have hit a rough patch with a 2-4 record in May so far. The eight losses are the most in a season since 2013, but six of those setbacks are by three runs are fewer. Senior Payton Colbert paces the offense with a .460 batting average, 29 hits and 24 RBIs.

  7. Gloucester (13-3, 3). After watching their winning streak end at seven with a 2-1 loss to Audubon, the Lions bounced back with a 2-1 walk-off victory over West Deptford. Junior Ava Rodgers, who had the walk-off hit against WD, leads the team with a .417 batting average and 17 RBIs.

  8. Cinnaminson (15-7, 8). Despite a recent skid with four losses in their last six games, the Pirates still own the top power-point ranking in South Jersey Group 2. Junior Maddyn Rittler is among the team leaders with 27 hits, 22 runs scored and 15 RBIs.

  9. Haddon Heights (10-5-1, 11). The Garnets are 6-1 over their last seven games. Senior Gracie Granate has handle the bulk of the pitching chores this spring, including a career-high 11 innings in a win over Haddon Township on May 2. She has 125 strikeouts over 73 frames.

  10. Audubon (11-3, 15). The Green Wave have reeled off seven straight wins, outscoring their opponents 51-1 over the stretch. Senior Emily Bobo and sophomore Alaina Copsetta have combined for a 1.27 ERA and 0.738 WHIP with 129 strikeouts.

  11. Cherokee (11-7-1, 13). Since the calendar flipped to May, Cherokee is unbeaten at 4-0. The team boasts three hitters with 20 or more knocks with Jordan Hreben (28), Kasey McNee (27) and Luci Dandrea (22). All three are sophomores with a .400 batting average or higher.

  12. Lenape (12-8, 10). With 34 runs combined over its last five games, Lenape has notched a 4-1 record over the stretch. The club has smacked 12 homers, all by three players - Vanessa Myers, Camryn Shank and Rebecca Taylor – all of whom have hit four each.

  13. West Deptford (11-5, 12). After knocking off St. Joseph on May 1, the Eagles have dropped two of their last three games. Freshman Jordyn Ambrosius has homered twice in her last five games and has four round-trippers on the season.

  14. Moorestown (15-5, 9). The Quakers are cooking with four straight wins by a combined 50-0 count. Senior Julia Miller is 7-for-9 with six runs scored and six RBIs over the stretch, raising her season batting average to .444.

  15. Eastern (15-4, 14). The Vikings salvaged a tough week with a thrilling 6-5 comeback win over Washington Township on May 9. After dropping consecutive games to Rancocas Valley and Shawnee, Eastern overcame a 5-0 deficit to beat WT, scoring the final two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Ryleigh Natale has nine hits in her last four games, raising her team-best total to 33 with a .471 batting average.
