South Africa vs Namibia LIVE! AFCON result, match stream and latest updates today

South Africa vs Namibia LIVE!

A crucial match in Group E of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations took place in Korhogo this evening. South Africa, fresh from a defeat to open their tournament, beat Namibia in something of a local rivalry on the international scene.

The 601-mile border that runs between those two nations is rarely focused on when it comes to football but the stakes are high when these neighbours meet tonight. The Brave Warriors of Namibia, rank outsiders heading into this AFCON, won their first-ever game in the competition at the tenth attempt last time out and a point will now send them into the last-16.

Bafana Bafana, meanwhile, were beaten by Mali but the west Africans' draw with Tunisia yesterday has kept the group wide open. A brace from Themba Zwane led them to a 4-0 win after Percy Tau netted an early penalty.

South Africa vs Namibia highlights

  • GOAL! Tau hits early penalty for Bafana Bafana

  • GOAL! Zwane makes Namibia rue missed chances

  • GOAL! Second from Zwane in South African dreamland

  • GOAL! Maseko off the bench to make it four

Highlights: South Africa make it 4-0

21:57 , Marc Mayo

Another blistering counter-attack does the job for Bafana Bafana.

South Africa 4-0 Namibia | Full time!

21:55 , Marc Mayo

Four goals send Bafana Bafana to their first win at the 2023 AFCON!

They are now on the brink of the last-16, while Namibia likely need a result against Mali to make it through themselves.

South Africa 4-0 Namibia | 90 mins

21:50 , Marc Mayo

Four added minutes, and no VAR repercussions for that foul.

South Africa 4-0 Namibia | 89 mins

21:49 , Marc Mayo

Pitchside microphones picking up the pained grunts of Thapelo Maseko after he goes down under a rough challenge, landed right on his shin.

Studs up, too. Will VAR want a look at that?

South Africa 4-0 Namibia | 85 mins

21:45 , Marc Mayo

Almost a chance for five as Percy Tau clips a pass into the box, which is far too powerful for Thapelo Maseko to get hold of.

South Africa 4-0 Namibia | 80 mins

21:40 , Marc Mayo

Late injury worry for Bafana Bafana as Thapelo Morena is taken off via a stretcher, which he hops off on the sideline.

Evidence Makgopa also departs, on come Orlando Pirates' Zakhele Lepasa and Mihlali Mayambela.

GGGOOOOAAALLLL!!! South Africa 4-0 Namibia | Maseko, 75'

21:35 , Marc Mayo

IT'S FOUR!

The goalkeeper should do better but young winger Thapelo Maseko bags the next goal for South Africa!

South Africa 3-0 Namibia | 74 mins

21:33 , Marc Mayo

Two more Namibian changes before a South African free-kick. Ryan Nyambe and Prins Tjiueza depart, on come Joslin Kamatuka and Wendell Rudath.

It'll be an in-swinger... straight at the goalkeeper.

South Africa 3-0 Namibia | 70 mins

21:30 , Marc Mayo

Time for the first changes from South Africa as Themba Zwane departs with a pair of goals to his name.

The booked Sphephelo Sithole also departs, for Thapelo Maseko and Thabang Monare.

South Africa 3-0 Namibia | 68 mins

21:27 , Marc Mayo

Plenty of slick passing from the Brave Warriors in their opposition half now, it's hard to say who looks more likely to score next as we approach the final 20 minutes.

South Africa 3-0 Namibia | 65 mins

21:25 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Swift counter by Namibia sends Bethuel Muzeu into the box and he HAS to shoot... but passes it into touch!

The substitute was too concerned about picking out captain Peter Shalulile for a tap-in.

South Africa 3-0 Namibia | 64 mins

21:24 , Marc Mayo

Free-kick to Bafana Bafana on the edge of the box, the in-swinger cannons off the wall.

South Africa 3-0 Namibia | 60 mins

21:19 , Marc Mayo

You can sense the confidence flowing through South Africa as they nip the ball around the chasing Namibian defenders.

The Brave Warriors have put in a really good shift so far, let's see how empty their tanks run in the final half-hour.

South Africa 3-0 Namibia | 56 mins

21:16 , Marc Mayo

Sphephelo Sithole booked for Bafana Bafana, which has been coming really for his tactical fouls.

South Africa 3-0 Namibia | 54 mins

21:14 , Marc Mayo

South Africa are sat very deep defensively, asking Namibia what they are capable of to break them open.

A nifty run forward fails to draw a shot on goal however as an overhit pass is run into touch.

South Africa 3-0 Namibia | 49 mins

21:09 , Marc Mayo

Namibia still going at it but they're lacking the accuracy on the ball required to trouble South Africa, whose defence is sitting back neatly.

A quick ball up the other end, Thapelo Morena gets in behind and shoots right at the keeper.

South Africa 3-0 Namibia | 46 mins

21:07 , Marc Mayo

Those Namibia changes were Petrus Shitembi and Absalom Iimbondi off, Ngero Katua and Bethuel Muzeu on to spruce up their attack and add some steel to the midfield.

South Africa 3-0 Namibia | Kick-off!

21:05 , Marc Mayo

Double change from Namibia as we get back underway in Ivory Coast.

All about pride for Namibia

21:00

Goal difference could be the deciding factor in a tie to be one of the best third-place teams for the knockouts.

Namibia must keep it tighter at the back and grabbing a consolation goal could be worth its weight in gold.

Highlights: Themba Zwane for 3-0

20:57 , Marc Mayo

The South African striker does it all himself to surely put this game to bed.

South Africa couldn't ask for more

20:54 , Marc Mayo

It was perhaps fortuitous for Bafana Bafana to earn a penalty via a VAR decision for a hard-to-spot handball, but they have certainly made the most of it.

Percy Tau's penalty has been followed by a brace from Themba Zwane, the second a fine solo goal, and in the second half you sense they will try and build their lead out before cruising down the home straight.

South Africa 3-0 Namibia | Half-time!

20:50 , Marc Mayo

A dream 45 minutes for South Africa.

Despite some nervy moments at the back, a brace from Themba Zwane after Percy Tau's early penalty have put them on course for a first win at this AFCON.

South Africa 3-0 Namibia | 45 mins

20:46 , Marc Mayo

We have four minutes of added time to go until a half-time break that Namibia desperately need.

South Africa 3-0 Namibia | 42 mins

20:43 , Marc Mayo

Namibia keep going and win a corner but they look so vulnerable on the counter.

Here come Bafana Bafana and Evidence Makgopa is fed in the box but shoots just over, via a fingertip save!

GGGGOOOOAAALLLL!!! South Africa 3-0 Namibia | Zwane, 40'

20:40 , Marc Mayo

THEMBA ZWANE WITH A SUPERB INDIVIDUAL EFFORT!

That must be game, set and match!

South Africa 2-0 Namibia | 36 mins

20:36 , Marc Mayo

CLOSE!

A corner whipped into the Namibian box beats everyone, the goalkeeper included, and Sphephelo Sithole nods over from point-blank range! That had to go in.

South Africa 2-0 Namibia | 35 mins

20:35 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Namibia load the box for a free-kick but it's cleared and South Africa break.

Percy Tau fires a quick ball forward and Evidence Makgopa runs through some weak defending... but his shot is well saved.

After a bit of a scramble, it's cleared.

Highlights: South Africa bag second goal

20:32 , Marc Mayo

A lovely ball over the top to create space down the right flank, and it was all clinical from there for Bafana Bafana.

South Africa 2-0 Namibia | 28 mins

20:29 , Marc Mayo

South Africa have punished Namibia for missed chances but this one is far from over.

You sense the Brave Warriors will not change their approach at all, in this thoroughly entertaining derby clash.

GGGGOOOOAAALLL!!! South Africa 2-0 Namibia | Zwane, 25'

20:25 , Marc Mayo

BAFANA BAFANA DOUBLE THEIR LEAD!

A lovely run down the right sees a low cross buried by Themba Zwane!

South Africa 1-0 Namibia | 24 mins

20:24 , Marc Mayo

Again, Namibia's Riaan Hanamub causes all kinds of chaos for South Africa running down the left flank.

This time, his superb cross flashes across the face of goal without a simple touch to convert it!

The first attacker was offside, so it may have been struck off.

South Africa 1-0 Namibia | 22 mins

20:22 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

More slick football from Namibia as an overlap down the left picks out Absalom Iimbondi at the back post, but he can only reach behind him to shoot over the bar.

South Africa 1-0 Namibia | 20 mins

20:20 , Marc Mayo

Good possession being kept by South Africa to keep a lid on Namibia, with over 60 per cent of the ball so far.

Highlights: Percy Tau earns redemption

20:17 , Marc Mayo

South Africa lead early on.

South Africa 1-0 Namibia | 16 mins

20:16 , Marc Mayo

The Brave Warriors had started with some promising moments but now face a real test.

Can South Africa take the confidence from that opening goal and grab another?

GGGOOOOAAALLLL!! South Africa 1-0 Namibia | Tau, 14'

20:14 , Marc Mayo

Percy Tau missed the Bafana Bafana's penalty against Mali...

This time around it is that same man.

Tau steps up, left-footed and scores!

Penalty to South Africa!

20:13 , Marc Mayo

Riaan Hanamub's handball is punished!

Replays show he certainly did handle it, it wasn't deliberate but it was clumsy and outside of the "natural" body position, you could say.

South Africa will take it...

South Africa 0-0 Namibia | 11 mins

20:11 , Marc Mayo

To the monitor!

This might just be a penalty, you know...

South Africa 0-0 Namibia | 10 mins

20:11 , Marc Mayo

A delay as VAR checks over a potential handball in the Namibian box.

Riaan Hanamub appeared to handle the ball in a tangle with an attacker, as it bounced out of play.

That would be mighty harsh but he did technically handle it...

South Africa 0-0 Namibia | 8 mins

20:09 , Marc Mayo

A huge opening for Namibia... but the offside flag is up.

Nonetheless a brilliant piece of work from captain Peter Shalulile to battle for the ball from a quick pass into the box. He slashes a major opening wide but it wouldn't have counted.

South Africa 0-0 Namibia | 7 mins

20:08 , Marc Mayo

Good composure on the ball from South Africa early on, with a really nice rhythm and pace to the game already.

A free-kick from the right is floated into the Namibia box but the keeper punches out.

South Africa 0-0 Namibia | 4 mins

20:04 , Marc Mayo

Very decent hit by Prins Tjiueza as the Namibia midfielder latches onto a nice lay-off in the D, and Ronwen Williams is equal to it in the Bafana Bafana goal.

Lovely bit of football, that.

South Africa 0-0 Namibia | 2 mins

20:02 , Marc Mayo

The Brave Warriors are looking to press hard off the ball and pass it quickly on it, let's see how much precision their play will bring.

Early hit from range by Deon Hotto dribbles wide.

South Africa vs Namibia | Kick-off!

Out come the South African and Namibian players under the floodlights.

Kick-off is moments away...

South Africa vs Namibia | Countdown to kick-off

19:49 , Marc Mayo

We have a mere ten minutes to wait before this AFCON match begins.

It feels like a bigger one than anticipated, the local derby vibes were always prevalent but Namibia's win and defeat for South Africa to open the tournament have put the group on a knife edge.

It's very difficult to predict what will happen next!

Namibia can qualify for the knockouts tonight

19:45 , Marc Mayo

With that result yesterday, a win tonight will send Namibia into the last-16 of the Cup of Nations for the very first time.

A draw will also likely be enough given their head-to-head record against Tunisia.

For South Africa, a defeat will mean they can only secure a spot as a best third-place team. They cannot guarantee qualification tonight.

Tunisia and Mali all square in other Group E game

19:40 , Marc Mayo

Yesterday, it was the turn of the two favourites out of this group.

Tunisia and Mali played out a 1-1 draw with both goals scored in the opening 20 minutes.

That result was probably the best that South Africa and Namibia could have hoped for, given it keeps Mali within grasp and Tunisia winless going into the final matchday.

Focused Namibia players 'scare' coach

19:34 , Marc Mayo

Namibia boss Collin Benjamin has lauded the level of focus his squad have displayed at AFCON.

The ex-Hamburg defender told reporters: "They are just focused on the task at hand. I have never seen such dedication from a group of players.

"On the field, in the gym, during breakfast, they are just focused. Even I am afraid of them!

"They not only carrying their own aspirations but it’s the hopes and dreams of the entire nation. For us being underdogs to a certain extent we are immune to it.

"We are preparing properly and as professionals. We are going to give everything, and this is what we live for."

The warm-ups are underway.

South Africa boss demands better

19:24 , Marc Mayo

Hugo Broos has insisted he does have faith in his South Africa players to improve upon their tame opening to the Cup of Nations.

He said ahead of tonight's game: “In a 90-minute match, everyone’s is not focusing for the full match. You’re not always fully concentrating, but we know where Mali took their chances and what we need to do better.

"We have done our analysis and fully understand our mishaps, and against Namibia we are hoping it is a different result.

“My players are performing well, at practice we are doing everything right – it is now up to them to take that confidence on the practice pitch and apply it to their game. Only they can do that, and I believe they can and that they will."

Atmosphere building in Korhogo

19:14 , Marc Mayo

We're not expecting a massive attendance for this game, which takes place about 5,000km away from both of these nations, but Bafana Bafana's biggest fan Joyce Chauke, also known as Mama Joy, is in the stands!
