SOFTBALL: Verdigris, Claremore face tough losses on opening day of RSU Festival

Aug. 18—On the opening day of the Rogers State University Festival, both the Verdigris and Claremore softball teams faced losses at RSU's Diamond Sports Complex.

COWETA 5, VERDIGRIS 4

Verdigris experienced a heart-wrenching loss against Coweta in a close 5-4 game.

Despite out-hitting their opponents 7-6, the Lady Cardinals couldn't hold on to their lead. The game was tied at 3 when the Lady Tigers' Savannah Rupe's crucial 2-2 count single in the bottom of the fifth inning brought in two runs.

Daylee Day's double in the first inning put Coweta on the scoreboard, while Hannah Sikes' sacrifice bunt helped Verdigris tie the game at 3.

Despite a valiant effort, pitcher Raegan Bennett allowed five runs on six hits throug five innings. Rhyan Waltonbaugh's two hits were a highlight for the Lady Cardinals.

MIAMI 7, CLAREMORE 1

Claremore faced a tough challenge against Miami, resulting in a 7-1 defeat.

The Lady Wardogs' offensive prowess was evident as they scored early and maintained their lead throughout the game. Miami capitalized on two singles in the first inning, with Brooklyn Powell's single bringing in two runs.

Jazmine Cookson's efforts in the circle for the Lady Zebras were unable to hold the Lady Wardogs back, for they added runs in the third inning as well. Emoree Woody shone for the Claremore with three hits, while Riley Faye managed two hits for Claremore.

Miami's Faith Lemonds had a strong showing, striking out 10 to help secure the victory.

Chelsea and Inola, the other local teams participating in the three-day tournament, did not play on Thursday, awaiting their respective turns to compete in the event on Friday and Saturday.
