Softball Recap: Reading finds its footing after Tekonsha Invitational win

HILLSDALE COUNTY — Some teams took a step in the right direction during the week of April 22-28. The last full week of April softball showcased rivalry doubleheader sweeps, our highest scoring game of the season and a bounce back invitational win.

That invitational win highlights the biggest winner of the week in local prep softball. Coach Melissa Warfield and the Reading varsity softball team took down Tekonsha and Burr Oak to win the Tekonsha softball invitational.

The Rangers defeated Tekonsha 9-8, a strong offensive effort supported by Leah Headley's nine strikeouts through four innings and Ariana McDowell's five strikeouts through two innings, allowing just one hit. McDowell earned the win for the game, throwing strikeouts in a 1-2-3 inning to close the game.

Headley, McDowell and Aubree Ervans each had a double-base hit. McDowell had three hits and three runs. Ervans had two RBIs. Headley had two hits, two RBIs and a run. Maggie Santure had a triple among her two hits. Santure also had two RBIs and one run. McDowell led the team with two stolen bases.

In their final game, McDowell earned the win in a 6-2 final against the Burr Oak Bobcats. McDowell had 10 strikeouts, giving up just two earned runs. McDowell and Santure both had a triple. McDowell had two hits, two RBIs and one run. Ervans had two hits, one RBI and one run. Santure had a hit, RBI and run. So did Blakeleigh Cornstubble. Headley had one hit and an RBI.

It was a strong bounce back event win for the Rangers, who were victims of one of our other team winners from this week.

Jonesville wins doubleheader against former league rival Reading

After losing two back-to-back doubleheaders to Columbia Central and Grass Lake in league play, the Jonesville varsity softball team needed a rebound effort to get back on track. It got its bounce back win against former league and county rival Reading. The Comets defeated the Reading Rangers 6-5 and 15-5.

Game one was a battle between two county ace pitchers: Ariana McDowell of Reading and Lyra Nichols of Jonesville. The senior Comet got the win, striking out 10 over seven innings and giving up just one earned run. McDowell contributed five strikeouts and gave up four earned runs.

Nichols also contributed to the offensive effort, leading the team with two doubles in two hits and adding two runs. Elena Prater had a double as well and had two hits, three RBIs and one run. Megan Hewlett had a double, two total hits and two RBIs. Ava Kramer had a hit and an RBI. Gracen Hager had one double.

Cornstubble, Headley, McDowell and Santure each had two hits for the Rangers. Santure led the team with two RBIs.

Game two was won by Bryn Rusk of Jonesville. The Comet pitcher had seven strikeouts and three earned runs. Headley pitched two innings for Reading, striking out two and giving up five earned runs. Aubree Ervans had three strikeouts and six earned runs.

Prater and Hager each had another double for Jonesville. At-bat, Hager had two doubles, three total hits, two RBIs and four runs. Hager led the team with two stolen bases. Prater had two RBIs and three runs. Hewlett had three RBIs and a triple-base hit. Kramer had an RBI base hit. Rusk scored twice. Nichols had her sixth home run of the season, three RBIs and three runs.

Other winners

Camden-Frontier softball had a major 31-6 win over rival North Adams-Jerome. Elexis Landwehr pitched three innings, striking out five and giving up just one earned run, five total hits.

The scorebook was logged with impressive performances. Landwehr had a triple and three total runs. Maddie Stephens had two stolen bases, three hits, two RBIs and four runs. Heidi Gawronski had two hits, five RBIs and five runs. K Mckibbin had two hits, four RBIs and three runs. Tydann Cooney led the team with six RBIs and also had three hits and three runs. Lexus Sigler had two doubles, three RBIs and four runs. Regan Schaedler scored three runs. Paityn Vincent had one hit and two runs. Annabelle Corkel had three hits, two RBIs and four runs. Mckibbin and Gawronski each had two stolen bases.

Halie Rice led the Rams with one hit and two RBIs. Daniles had two runs. Cheyenne Welsh had one hit and one run. Kamryn Wagler had one hit, one RBI and two runs. Bumps had one hit and one RBI.

Pittsford beats Tekonsha

Shelby Bryner got the win in the circle for Pittsford in their 9-6 win over Tekonsha. The senior struck out 12 batters. Bryner also had two home runs, including a grand slam. B Henson had a triple-base hit, two total hits and two runs. Carmen Gramlich had two runs and two hits. Kaylee Lawson and Mayci Revers each had two hits. Kaydence Jones had one hit, one run and an RBI.
