Softball: 2023 Home News Tribune Greater Middlesex Conference All-Area teams

FIRST TEAM

P: CAITLIN GAY, EAST BRUNSWICK, JUNIOR

The junior right-hander took over in the circle in May and finished 9-3 with a 2.26 ERA, striking out 61, while walking just 16 in 71 innings. Distinguished herself at the plate as wel,l batting .506 with 42 hits and 22 RBI.

P: AVA MORMILE, SPOTSWOOD, SOPHOMORE

Mormile surged down the stretch and took on some big assignments for a sophomore, pitching for the Chargers in the GMCT semifinals and state sectional quarterfinals. She went 12-2 with a 1.55 ERA, whiffing 124 batters in 85 2/3 innings to give her 228 career strikeouts entering her junior campaign.

P: HAYLEY WIECZERZAK, ST. THOMAS AQUINAS, JUNIOR

The two-time HNT Player of the Year had another banner season despite battling an injured left knee, leading the Trojans to a fifth straight GMCT title and third consecutive trip to the sectional finals. She went 21-3 with 307 strikeouts in 144 innings and a 0.97 ERA, and enters her senior campaign with 609 career strikeouts. She is committed to join teammate Mary Kate Murray at Albany after that.

C: BRIANNA DE LA FUENTE, METUCHEN, SENIOR

The Providence-bound backstop batted .581 with a 1.068 slugging percentage, 42 hits, eight home runs and 34 RBI. Finished her career with 124 hits, 108 RBI and owns the school’s single-season (12) and career (26) home run marks.

C: DIMITRA MILONOPOULOS, OLD BRIDGE, JUNIOR

The junior led the Knights with 41 hits, 23 runs and a .477 batting average. Got it done behind the plate as well, throwing out 32 runners this year. Over the last two seasons she’s delivered 84 hits while batting.483.

INF: JENN POKROPINSKI, SPOTSWOOD, SENIOR

The Spotswood star led the GMC with 44 hits and 45 RBI while batting .518 with six home runs. Pokropinski, who will attend Chestnut Hill next year, collected 91 hits and 90 RBI over her junior and senior campaigns.

INF: SARA MCNELLY, SOUTH PLAINFIELD, SENIOR

The Tigers leadoff hitter, who led the state in home runs last year, batted .471 with 23 RBI this season. Her career numbers include 119 hits, 104 RBI, 23 homers and a .493 batting average, She will be playing at Virginia Tech next year.

INF: MIA SZAP, METUCHEN, SENIOR

Batted .439 with 36 hits, 16 for extra bases and an .817 slugging percentage. Had a .931 fielding percentage at shortstop where she initiated three double plays and was involved in 13. She will attend Catholic University next fall after accumulating 112 hits, 91 runs and a .453 batting average during her high school career.

INF: MARY KATE MURRAY, ST. THOMAS AQUINAS, SENIOR

Led the GMC with 14 home runs and was leading the state until teams started walking her. Failed to hit a home run over her final eight games after walking in 15 of her 29 final plate appearances, and receiving 16 intentional walks for the season. Averaged a home run for every 4.9 at bats and batted .464 with 36 RBI and 1.159 slugging percentage. The Albany-bound senior set school records with 35 home runs and 115 RBI in just three seasons.

OF: VICTORIA FROBOSILO, NORTH BRUNSWICK, JUNIOR

Led the Raiders to the White Division title with a .633 batting average from 38 hits in 60 at bats, a 1.100 slugging percentage and scored 35 runs after beginning the season with a 15-game hitting streak. Will enter her senior campaign with 88 hits, 71 runs and a .515 career batting average.

OF: ABBY KOZO, METUCHEN, SENIOR

The Georgetown-bound four-year starter excelled at the plate, in the field and in the circle. Batted .488 and slugged .857 this year with 41 hits, 30 runs and 27 RBI as a lead-off hitter. The southpaw struck out 58 in 73 innings and her 148 career hits are the most in the program’s history.

DH: LINDSAY OLLER, SOUTH PLAINFIELD, JUNIOR

Provided some punch in the middle of the Tigers’ lineup batting .448 with 43 hits, 10 home runs and 37 RBI. Has accumulated 116 hits, 107 RBI and 24 home runs in her three varsity seasons with a .450 batting average.

UT: ALEX DIAZ, SPOTSWOOD, SENIOR

The versatile senior batted leadoff, played shortstop and pitched, where she compiled a 5-2 record with a 1.82 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 57 2/3 innings. Batted .438 with 35 hits, 24 RBI and scored 42 runs. Headed to Fordham after a well-rounded career in which she collected 110 hits, scored 122 runs and struck out 185 batters.

UT: LIZ NEGRON, ST. THOMAS AQUINAS, SOPHOMORE

The Trojans clean-up hitter batted .414 with 36 hits, 20 runs and 18 RBI, a decent number when you consider the batter hitting in front of her cleared the bases 14 times. Also served as the team’s No. 2 pitcher and recorded a 1.87 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 30 innings.

UT: MYIAH SUTTON, COLONIA, JUNIOR

Sutton enjoyed a mega junior campaign with 41 hits, five home runs and 30 RBI while batting .482. Ended the season on a tear with 15 hits and 10 RBI over her final eight games to give her exactly 100 career hits along with 11 home runs, 83 RBI and a .452 batting average.
