Social media reacts to Spencer Rattler going to the Saints in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft

After six quarterbacks went in the first 12 picks of the 2024 NFL Draft, there was a bit of a wait until the next signal-caller was taken — to put it lightly.

The next quarterback taken off the board, though, was a familiar name, both in South Carolina and nationally.

Former South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler was taken by the New Orleans Saints in the fifth round of the draft Saturday, with the No. 150 overall selection, marking a 138-pick gap between the draft’s sixth and seventh quarterbacks.

Rattler came into the draft as an intriguing prospect, a former No. 1 quarterback recruit coming out of high school who at one point was a preseason Heisman Trophy favorite before being supplanted by eventual Heisman winner Caleb Williams and moving on to South Carolina, where he got a fresh start and helped lead the Gamecocks to an eight-win season in 2022.

While he wasn’t considered to be in the same tier as fellow 2024 quarterback prospects like Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye or even J.J. McCarthy, he was widely viewed as an intriguing player who could go higher than expected, with Pro Football Focus even including him in the first round of their mock draft.

Ultimately, though, Rattler ended up in the fifth round, where his selection earned him more chatter than a typical late-round picks receives, given the fame and name recognition he accrued over his high school and college careers.

Here’s sampling of the reaction the Saints’ selection of Rattler received on social media:
