Snap Count Takeaways: Major notes from Oregon’s usage report vs. Oregon State

We now have a full regular season under our belts worth of usage reports for the Oregon Ducks, so it’s safe to say that we’ve got a pretty good idea of what the rotation for this team looks like, and how the depth chart formulates behind the starters.

Friday’s game against the Oregon State Beavers wasn’t necessarily a time to get a good look at all of those depth pieces, though it was a resounding victory. Going forward, it may be until next spring that we see those depth pieces, too, with each game the rest of the way holding more and more meaning, against better and better competition.

That’s not going to stop us from looking at the usage reports and trying to learn something new about the team each week. Here’s what we found from the snap counts this past week in a 31-7 win over Oregon State:

Takeaway: Tysheem Johnson's Snaps Down

Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

Safety Tysheem Johnson saw his snaps drop a little bit in this game, which was surprising to me. In most games that don’t end in massive blowouts with backups on the field at the end, Johnson has been right there with Evan Williams as one of the top snap-getters on the field, usually playing every down of the game. Williams was there this week against Oregon State, but Johnson stepped back a bit, playing only 49 snaps to Williams’ 61.

It was freshman Cole Martin who stepped in to make up the difference. Maybe this is due to the coaching staff liking what they saw from Martin against Arizona State in his relief of Williams, which would be very understandable. It will be interesting to see how much of the field Martin sees next week against a great Washington passing attack.

Takeaway: Dontae Manning Locks Up CB3

We’ve known all season that Khyree Jackson and Jahlil Florence were the CB1 and CB2 on the defense, but behind them there has been a bit of a rotation as coaches figure out the depth. I think we can now say that Dontae Manning has solidified himself as the next guy up, playing 46 snaps in this game, compared to 9 for Nikko Reed, and 3 for Trikweze Bridges.

It’s unclear when Florence will return, but Manning has looked very strong as of late.
