Smith qualifies for women's golf states after sixth-place finish at 3A Central Regional

Oct. 24—BURLINGTON — Scotland women's golfer Claire Smith qualified for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3A Women's Golf Championships on Monday at the 3A Central Regional at The Valley Golf Course in Burlington.

Smith finished with a score of 85 and tied for sixth place, along with Southern Alamance's Madison Brouillard, to be one of 17 golfers out of 57 that competed in the regional to advance to states.

"She has spent a lot of time this past year working really hard on her golf game, and it showed today," Scotland head coach Megan Jernigan said. "This was a pretty difficult course. There was a lot of water, sand, and trees; the hardest part was the blind shots. I am very proud of Claire's hard work and her dedication to the game. She absolutely loves the game and is in her element on the golf course."

The NCHSAA 3A Women's Golf Championships will be from Oct. 30-31 at Foxfire Resort and Golf in Foxfire.

Union Pines' Carolyn Coffey and Carrboro's Cristina Murphy won the regional with a score of 76.
