Sluggish first half dooms Cheboygan soccer's chances against NMSL leader Ogemaw Heights

WEST BRANCH – The Cheboygan girls soccer team was hoping for a much better result against Ogemaw Heights than the first time the two teams played earlier this season.

But the Northern Michigan Soccer League-leading Falcons had other plans in mind, hammering the Chiefs in a 6-0 home victory on Wednesday.

The Chiefs (9-3-2, 9-3-2) had all sorts of trouble in the first half against the Falcons, who dominated enough to build a 4-0 lead at the break.

“We played a tough second half, and kudos to (our goalkeeper) Mia Davis, who made some huge saves,” Cheboygan coach Tom Markham said. “If she doesn’t make some of those saves, it most certainly could have been worse. Ogemaw had good speed and toughness, and it just wasn’t our night.”

Late last week, Cheboygan used two goals from senior Taylor Bent, who netted a game winner with about six minutes left in a 2-1 victory at Clare.

After the Chiefs surrendered a Clare goal eight minutes into the second half, Bent equalized just a few minutes later. Recording assists were Morgan Davis and Ava Baldwin.
