Here is the SJ-R's large school baseball team for 2023

Five Class 3A baseball teams in The State Journal-Register's coverage area won 20 or more games in the 2023 season. Two teams, Chatham Glenwood and Rochester, won regional titles, and three more teams played for one: Lincoln, Sacred Heart-Griffin and Springfield High.

Glenwood went 16-2 to win the Central State Eight Conference, beating out second-place finishers Springfield High and Rochester (both went 14-4).

Twelve players were chosen for the SJ-R's Large School Baseball team. The players are listed alphabetically.

TYSON BINION, Rochester

The Rockets' junior shortstop and pitcher hit .296 (32-for-108) with 13 extra-base hits — including three homers — and drove in 18 runs. On the mound, he was 2-1 with four saves and carried a 1.59 ERA in 22 innings pitched with 19 Ks against just four walks.

RYNE CRUM, Springfield High

The senior first baseman and pitcher who helped the Senators win the Class 3A state championship in 2021 was third in the Central State Eight Conference with a .447 average (38-for-85). He drove in 28 runs and hit 13 doubles in 34 games. He only made two errors in 142 chances. He was 5-1 with a 2.18 ERA in 41 2/3 innings pitched. He struck out 38 against 17 walks.

PARKER DETMERS, Chatham Glenwood

The University of Louisville-bound senior pitcher was an Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 3A All-State selection. He went 7-1 (he threw a no-hitter in his only loss, to Rochester) and struck out 77 to just 11 walks in 46 1/3 innings pitched with a 0.45 ERA. At the plate, he contributed a .324 average (24-for-74) with four home runs and 24 RBIs. He is The State Journal-Register's Large School Baseball Player of the Year.

CRU ERICKSON, Chatham Glenwood

The junior outfielder batted .452 (38-for-84), had 11 extra-base hits, knocked in 26 runs and scored 32 runs for the Central State Eight Conference’s 16-2 champions. His batting average was second in the league.

COLBIE GLENN, Lincoln

The Railsplitters’ junior center fielder and closer batted .394 (50-for-127), had an on-base percentage of .473 and posted an on-base plus slugging percentage of 1.142. Almost half of his hits (24) went for extra bases with 17 doubles, three triples and four home runs. He was second on the team with 25 RBIs and he scored 43 runs. In 38 1/3 innings pitched, he was 3-2 with six saves. He fanned 44 and walked 18 and finished with an ERA of 1.83 for the 21-13 Railers.

The Spartans’ junior center fielder led the team with a .400 batting average (44-for-110), scored 31 runs and knocked in 16. He also stole 12 bases. He was one of just seven players in the Central State Eight Conference to hit at least .400.

SETH IMPSON, Springfield High

The junior second baseman and pitcher hit .371 (33-for-89) with six home runs, 16 total extra-base hits, and tied for the team lead with 28 RBIs for the 25-win Senators. He also stole 13 bases. He was 3-2 with a 2.36 ERA in 29 2/3 innings pitched. He struck out 35 hitters and walked 10. He announced he would play at Lincoln Land Community College.

CHARLIE LINDERMAN, Sacred Heart-Griffin

The Cyclones’ junior infielder and pitcher hit .418 (38-for-91) in 29 games and finished with 28 RBIs. He was 6-2 with a 2.87 ERA in 46 1/3 innings pitched. He struck out 32 hitters. He's verbally committed to Heartland Community College.

KRAYTON REINCKE, Chatham Glenwood

The Titans’ junior first baseman led the Central State Eight Conference with a .484 average (45-for-110) and added 10 doubles, three homers and 31 RBIs. He was on base 56.4% of the time and had a 1.295 on-base plus slugging percentage.

QUIN SAXER, Jacksonville

The Crimsons’ senior center fielder and pitcher carried the team with a .383 average (36-for-94) and added 24 RBIs and 16 extra-base hits. He was 5-6 with a 2.06 ERA in 68 innings pitched. He struck out 82 and walked 25.

JACK SWANEY, Rochester

The junior first baseman and pitcher helped get the Rockets to the Class 3A Lincoln Sectional title game. He hit .397 (46-for-116) with 12 doubles, four home runs and 28 RBIs. He had an on-base percentage of .486. On the mound, he was 3-2 with a 2.01 ERA in 49 2/3 innings and struck out 56 hitters. He verbally committed to play at Northern Illinois in July.

ENRICO VEACH, Springfield High

The Senators' junior shortstop and pitcher batted .365 (31-for-85), drove in 20 runs, scored 40 runs and stole a team-high 25 bases to tie Normal U-High's Charlie Vercruysse for the Central State Eight Conference lead. He also posted an on-base percentage of .509, a slugging percentage of .564 and an on-base plus slugging percentage of 1.074. He was 3-2 and struck out 25 in 19 1/3 innings pitched.
