Simons tosses perfect game for Woodland

WOODLAND — Shae Simons tossed a perfect abbreviated game and Woodland completed its regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Spring Valley (Hall) over the weekend.

The wins give the Warriors a 17-10 record as they head into the Class 1A Dwight Regional softball tournament this week.

Simons tossed a perfect game in the first game of the twin-bill as she did not allow a base hit or walk and the Woodland defense did not make an error. Simons struck out eight as the Warriors won 16-0.

The Woodland-Flanagan-Cornell co-op got on the board in the bottom of the first when Emma Highland tripled to drive in Ella Derossett with the first tally. Cloee Johnston had a two-run double and Kaiden Connor singled in a run to make it 4-0.

Kortney Harms doubled in Connor for a 5-0 lead after one.

Simons had a two-run double in the second inning and Johnston followed with a run-scoring single for an 8-0 lead.

Olivia Chismarick was warning up for a huge second game when she tripled in the third inning to drive in a run for a 9-0 lead in the opener. Derossett singled in Chismarick then scored on a Highland triple for an 11-0 lead. Johnston drove in another run and Clara Downey made it 14-0 with a base hit.

Highland ended the game in the fourth inning with a two-run double for the 15-plus-run difference.

Herscher 12, Lexington-Ridgeview 5

LEXINGTON — It was a tough weekend heading into the postseason for Lexington-Ridgeview as the Minutemen dropped two softball contests.

On Friday, a road trip to Herscher resulted in a 12-5 loss to the host Tigers. Lexington-Ridgeview fell behind 6-0 but rallied in the top of the sixth to trail by one. Makayla Ziegler tripled to drive in two runs to get the Minutemen on the board.

An error allowed Ziegler to score later and an Eva McCue single plated another run, cutting the deficit to two runs. Grace Grimsley scored on a groundout to make it 6-5.

Herscher responded in the bottom of the sixth by doubling its score for the final difference.

Ziegler had a triple and two runs batted in to lead Lexington-Ridgeview at the plate. Ella Sunday had two hits while McCue had a hit and RBI and Allison Epley, Josie Thomas and Ellie Doll each singled.

Grace Getty took the loss in the circle, giving up six runs (five earned) and striking out five. Emilee Bratcher also yielded six runs in relief. Zoe Spence closed it out.

On Saturday, Fisher exacted some revenge for a one-run loss to Lexington-Ridgeview earlier in the week with a 9-1 triumph over the Minutemen (14-15) at Keller Park. No other information was provided.

LeRoy 7, EPG 2

EL PASO — Head coach Stephen Krominga went with three pitchers to get some final work in before the postseason as El Paso-Gridley hosted LeRoy Saturday. The visiting Panthers prevailed 7-2 at South Pointe Park.

LeRoy scored a run in the top of the first and led the rest of the way. Mac Raymer yielded the tally and took the loss in his only inning of work on the bump.

Down 4-0, EPG got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mason Vandegraft stole third with Dominic Ricconi at the plate and one out. An error on the play allowed Vandegraft to score to get the Titans on the board.

It was a 6-1 game when EPG scored in the sixth inning. Again, it was Vandegraft crossing the plate with Ricconi at bat. This time a wild pitch allowed the run to score.

Vandegraft, Ricconi, Mitchell Silver and Mitchell Wilson each singled for EPG's four hits.

Raymer fanned two in his one inning of work for EPG (13-13). Brady Veselack took over in the second and gave up six runs in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out one. Will McNamara finished up, striking out two in 1 2/3 innings.

Dee-Mack 4, Lexington 3

LEXINGTON — A pair of runs for Dee-Mack in the top of the seventh lifted the visitors to a 4-3 win over Lexington at Keller Park Friday.

The Minutemen had taken a three-run lead through three innings. A one-out single from Hayden Sennett plated Braeden Barber in the second inning to get Lexington on the board. Something would come back to haunt the home team was leaving the bases loaded.

Nolan Bowles went yard in the third inning. Drake Powell reached on an error to lead off the Lexington third. He trotted home when Bowles homered to left, making it 3-0.

Dee-Mack scored twice in the fourth and then added the tying and winning runs in the seventh.
