Siena Heights to add women's flag football

ADRIAN — If it's good for the International Olympic Committee, it's good for Siena Heights University.

The school announced Wednesday morning it intends to add women's flag football to its' roster of available sports and will begin play in 2025.

"We are thrilled to be the first university in Michigan to offer a flag football program," said Siena Heights University president Dr. Douglas B. Palmer in a press release. "This is an exciting opportunity to provide new opportunities for female students to participate in sports. Flag football is a fast-growing sport that is popular among women of all ages, and we are confident that our program will be a success."

SHU is the first school in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference or the Mid-Stats Football Association to add the sport to its varsity lineup.

Flag football is the first sport the school has added since making men's and women's wrestling the 24th and 25th Saints programs.

The school has 11 women's sports, including: basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, stunt, track and field, volleyball and wrestling.

It also has 11 men's sports: baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, track and field, volleyball and wrestling.

In addition, there are three co-ed sports: cheer, dance and e-sports.

A search for a head coach will begin immediately. Currently there are 23 NAIA programs set to compete in the 2024 season. Ottawa University in Kansas are three-time national champions.

The IOC recently announced men's and women's flag football would be a part of the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
