Shreveport-Bossier area’s Week 4 Top 10 high school football poll

Here's a look at the Week 4 top 10 high school football teams in the Shreveport-Bossier City area, as ranked by the USA Today Sports Network, after votes by area coaches and reviewing power ratings.

Here are our picks after three weeks of play:

  1. Airline (3-0) – Can any team slow down the Viking train? Ben Taylor’s five TD passes, Bryson Broom’s three scores and interceptions by Braylyn Jackson and Jeremiah Boudreaux were too much for Northwood. And that’s not even mentioning Tre’Von Jackson. Last week: No. 1; This week: vs. Benton (1-2)

2. Calvary (3-0) – After going 2-0 on the season against District 1-5A, the Cavaliers step up play this week against undefeated Wossman. The Wildcats have allowed one TD in three games behind 6-foot-3, 290-pound defender Jayden Williams, the self-proclaimed No. 1 player in the state. Last week: No. 2; This week: vs. Wossman (3-0)

3. Ruston (2-1) – Anyone who doubts the veracity of the Bearcats’ schedule should take another look. LCA comes in averaging 53.6 points a game, but it hasn’t faced a defense of the same caliber of Ruston's. Last week: No. 3; This week: vs. Lafayette Christian (3-0)

TIM BRANDO: The late Doug Robinson left Tim Brando laughing on the golf course

TOP PERFORMERS: Top football performers in the Shreveport-Bossier City area for the week of Sept. 14-15

WEEK 4 GAMES: Here’s the North Louisiana high school football games for Week 4 of the 2023 season

4. Parkway (3-0) – The battle of the Brothertons takes place this week. How close this one is depends on how well the Bucs can get past last week’s disappointing loss to Many — and a lot will depend on if the injured Christian Turner is in the lineup for Haughton. Last week: No. 4; This week: vs. Haughton (2-1)

5. North DeSoto (2-1) – The Griffin punch of Kenny Thomas, Luke Delafield, Trysten Hopper and Cole Corey will make things tough for the Tide this week after their performances against Loyola last week. Last week: No. 5; This week: vs. Minden (0-3)

6. Captain Shreve (2-1) – The Gators have been up and down so far this season, and they’ll need to really be up to get past Byrd in their annual grudge match. Can Brodie Page and company make it happen and send the Jackets to 0-4 for the first time since 2019? Last week: No. 9; This week: vs. Byrd (0-3)

7. Many (2-1) – The Tigers had a lot of luck involved in their win over Haughton taking advantage of three lost fumbles. But they got the big play when they needed it — and Tylen Singleton is an animal. Last week: Unranked; This week: at Newman

8. Haughton (2-1) – The Buccaneers shoulda, coulda, woulda defeated Many last week, and remained undefeated had just a couple of key things gone their way. But, alas, it’s high school football and there’s no place for excuses. Last week: No. 7; This week: at Parkway (3-0)

Haughton vs. Many Friday evening, September 15, 2023, at Haughton High School.
Haughton vs. Many Friday evening, September 15, 2023, at Haughton High School.

9. Huntington (2-1) – The Raiders had a lot right things going on until they had to face perennial power Neville on the road. They have a chance to right their ship this week behind the talented Lorenzo White. Last week: No. 8; This week: vs. Northwood (0-3)

10. Evangel (1-2) – Not many were surprised that the Eagles were unable to defeat Westgate on the road last week, but the disparity in the score, 34-12, might have been surprising for an offense normally as prolific as the Eagles’. Last week: No. 6; This week: vs. Bossier (1-2)

Dropped out: Natchitoches Central (1-2): NCHS got manhandled by previously winless ASH and fell out of the Top 10.
