A big day for Shore Conference wrestling at the Escape The Rock Tournament

ESCAPE THE ROCK TOURNAMENT

AT COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH (PA.) HIGH SCHOOL

Three Shore Conference wrestlers won championships in their individual weight classes at the power-packed tournament.

St. John Vianney sophomore Anthony Knox got some payback for the only defeat of his scholastic tournament by winning the 121-pound title. Teammate Jasiah Queen won at 160 and Southern junior Matt Henrich won in dramatic fashion at 152.

Christian Brothers Academy senior Julian George finished second at 145 pounds.

Knox, last year's NJSIAA 113-pound champion, defeated No. 2 seed Gauge Betero of Faith Christian (Pa.) Academy 9-2.

It is the second tournament championship of the season for Knox. He won the Beast of the East 120-pound title on Dec. 18.

The only defeat of Knox's scholastic career came in the 113-pound final in last season's Escape The Rock Tournament.

The No. 1 seed, Knox had defeated No. 4 seed Max Elton of Holy Spirit 7-1 in the semifinal. Elton was seventh in the state at 113 last season.

Henrich, the NJSIAA seventh-place finisher at 138 last season, defeated No. 10 seed Nathan Rikards of Malivern Pa. Prep 5-3 on a takedown with 22 seconds left in the sudden victory period. Rikards had tied the bout with a takedown with 14 seconds left.

The No. 5 seed, Henrich had advanced to the final with am 8-1 win over No. 1 seed Paul Ogmissanti of Blair Academy 8-1 in the semifinal.

It is the third tournament placing of the season for Henrich. He won the 150-pound title at Southern's Robin Leff Tournament and was fifth at 152 in the Powerade Tournament.

Queen, the state fifth-place finisher at 157 last season, defeated No. 4 seed Bekhruz Sadriddinov of Councile Rock South (Pa.) 5-3. Queen had a takedown in the first period and turned Sadriddinov for two back points in the second. Sadriddinov had a reversal late in the second and nearly put Queen on his back.

The No. 2 seed, Queen had advanced to the final with a 3-2 win over No. 3 seed Reed Fulmer of Malvern Prep when he held off a late takedown attempt.

It was the third tournament final of the season for Queen. He was the runner-up at 165 in both the Beast of the East and Sam Cali Invitational.

George, the NJSIAA runner-up at 138 last season, was defeated 6-2 by Quakertown (Pa.'s) Collin Gaj in the final. He had advanced to the final with a 3-1 win over No. 8 seed Max Stein of Faith Christian Academy 3-1. T

Other Shore Conference to place in the 53-team tournament were: CBA's Zander Silva (third at 160);CBA's Rob Canterino (fourth at 215); CBA's Alex Nini (sixth at 139); Southern's Anthony Evangelista (sixth at heavyweight); CBA's Tyler Barrett (seventh at 152) and St. John Vianney's Jake Zaltsman (eighth at 127).

CBA finished eighth in the team standings with 105.5 points. Southern was ninth with 83.5 and St. John Vianney 12th with 81.5.

Malvern Prep won the team title with 206.5 points. Blair Academy was second with 181 and St. Joseph (Montvale) third with 147.

AT COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH (PA.) HIGH SCHOOL

St. John Vianney's returning state champion Anthony Knox (121) led a contingent of five Shore Conference wrestlers that advanced to the semifinals of the power-packed 53-team tournament.

Other semifinalists from the Shore are: Christian Brothers Academy's returning state fourth-place finisher Alex Nini (139) and returning state runner-up Julian George (145); Southern's returning state seventh-place finisher Matt Henrich (152) and St. John Vianney's returning state fifth-place finisher Jasiah Queen (165).

The semifinals will take place Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and the first, third and fifth-place bouts will be at 2 p.m.

Knox, the top seed, will wrestle No. 4 seed Max Elton of Holy Spirit in the semifinal. Elton was seventh in the state at 113 last season - the weight Knox won the state title at.

The only defeat of Knox's scholastic career so far during his one-plus seasons came in the 113-pound final of this tournament last season.

Nini, the No. 6 seed, will wrestle No. 2 seed Pierson Manville of State College (Pa.) in the semifinal.

George, the No. 5 seed, will wrestle No. 8 seed Max Stein of Faith Christian (Pa.) in the semifinal.

Henrich, the No. 5 seed, will wrestle No. 1 seed Paul Ognissanti of Blair Academy in the semifinal.

Queen, the No. 2 seed, will wrestle No. 3 seed Reed Fulmer of Malvern Prep in the semifinal. Queen defeated St. Joseph (Montvale's) returning state qualifier Ryan Burton 4-3 in the quarterfinal.

The only defeat of Knox's scholastic career so far during his one-plus seasons came in the 113-pound final of this tournament last season.

CBA is currently seventh in the team standings with 73.5 points. Southern is ninth with 57.5 points. St. John Vianney is 11th with 48.5 points.

Powerful Blair Academy leads with 113 points followed by Malvern (Pa.) Prep wioth 107.5 points. St. Joseph (Montvale) and St. Peter's Prep are tied for third with 82 points.

BUC CLASSIC

AT RED BANK REGIONAL

Jackson Liberty had four champions and won the team championship at the 17-team tournament.

The Lions finished with 232 points, 48 more than Freehold, which also had four champions. Pinelands, which also had three champions, was third with 171 points followed by Red Bank Regional with 130 points and Manasquan with 122.

Jackson Liberty's champions were Armani McCann (106), Anthony Urso (113), Tucker Pazinko (120) and returning state qualifier Jake Klein (190).

Urso, the Region 6 fifth-place finisher at 106 last season, defeated Red Bank's previously-unbeaten Kevin Ruland 7-6 in the ultimate tiebreaker.

Freehold's champions were two-time state qualifier Angelo Messina (138), Michael Connelly (144), Andrew Fata (157) and returning state qualifier Joseph Berryman (165).

Pinelands' champions were Josiah Hart (126), returning state qualifier Mason Livio (132) and Gavin Wagner (175).

Livio defeated Keansburg's Dominic Terracciano 3-1. Terracciano was the Region 5 fifth-place finisher at 138 last season, when he was at St. John Vianney. Saturday was Terracciano's season debut after he had to sit the first 30 days of the season under the NJSIAA's transfer rules.

Manasquan's Noah Mammeri (215) was the other champion from the Shore Conference.

Toms River East 37, Woodstown 30: Shane Sickler's 13-0 major decision in the final bout at 106 pounds capped a 16-point rally over the final three bouts and gave the Raiders the win over the Wolverines.

A forfeit to Anastasios Erbaturakis (215) began the winning run. Returning region qualifier James Lynch (heavyweight) gave Toms River East a 33-30 lead with a pin and set the stage for Sickler.

Wall 37, Lower Cape May 35: A pin by returning region champion and two-time state qualifier Donovan DiStefano (150) in the next-to-last bout and an 8-4 win by Will Kinsella (157) in the final bout gave the Crimson Knights the win over the Tigers.

8. Manalapan 45, Wall 24: Sergey Zvalnik began the match with a pin at 175 pounds and then the Crimson Knights forfeited the next two weight as Manalapan built an early 18-0 lead and went on to the win.

Anthony Vitola (120), returning state qualifier Vincent DePierro (132), Anthony Mucciolo (144) pinned for Manalapan.

In a bout between two of the better heavyweights in the Shore, Wall's 2021 Central Region 220-pound sixth-place finisher Kei'Sun Sanders defeated Artem Reinikov-Jouk 5-4.

Long Branch 33, Rumson-Fair Haven 32: A pin by Joe Giordano in the next-to-last bout at 144 pounds in his season debut clinched the Green Wave's win over the Bulldogs.

The pin gave Long Branch a 33-26 lead. Rumson-Fair Haven's Evan Ridgway (152) then pinned in the final bout.

Giordano was a two-time state qualifier over the last three seasons for St. John Vianney. He went 1-2 at 106 pounds in the 2020 tournament and came within one win of earning a state medal at 126 pounds last season. Giordano had to sit out the first 30 days of the season under the NJSIAA's transfer rules.

Long Branch built an 18-0 lead after three bouts as Devon Smith (157), Cristian Cunalata (165) and Tornick Kajaia (175) all pinned.

Rumson-Fair Haven pulled within 27-26 headed into the 144-pound bout with a three-bout, 15-point run from 126-138 that included pins by Julian DuQue (126) and Cole Pangborn.

A key for Long Branch was Moises Meza (215) holding returning region champion and two-time state qualifier Hudson Skove to a major decision.

Rumson-Fair Haven 43, Toms River South 33

Red Bank Catholic 53, Toms River South 21: The Caseys' 2021 170-pound state finalist and two-time state top four finisher Sabino Portella took the match for the first time this season in a match. He received a forfeit at 190 pounds.

Red Bank Catholic 38, Long Branch 25: Portella won by technical fall, returning region qualifier Michael Palmieri (190) pinned and returning state heavyweight seventh-place finisher Lorenzo Portella pinned during a 20-6 run over the first five bouts as the Caseys defeated the Green Wave.

Giordano had a major decision in this match.

ST. JOSEPH (METUCHEN QUAD

Delsea 63, Donovan Catholic 7: Kurt Wehner (120), who was seventh in the state at 106 pounds last season, majored returning state qualifier Zavier Stokes 14-0 and Sawyer Ostroff (126) made his season debut with a 5-1 win for the Griffins in their defeat to the powerful Crusaders.

Ostroff was a region runner-up and state qualifier at Howell last season. He transferred to Donovan Catholic in the offseason and became eligible Saturday after sitting out the first 30 days of the season under the NJSIAA's transfer rules.

Paramus Catholic 37, St. Joseph (Metuchen) 21: A 28-point run over the final seven bouts erased a 21-9 deficit and gave the Paladins the win over the Falcons.

Delsea 28, Paramus Catholic 27: A 6-2 win by returning state qualifier Gage Summers at 106 pounds - the final bout of the match - lifted the Crusaders into a 27-27 tie with the Paladins. Delsea then won the match on criteria E - most pins 2-1.

Zavier Stokes (120) and returning state fifth-place finisher Jamar Dixon (132) pinned for Delsea. Ethan Smith pinned for Paramus Catholic.

Delsea is ranked No. 8 in the New Jersey Wrestling Writers Association Top 20. Paramus Catholic ranked No. 5 in the NJWWA Top 20.

St. Joseph (Metuchen) 49, Donovan Catholic 18: Kurt Wehner (120), returning state qualifier Dezmond Lenaghan (126) and Sawyer Ostroff (132) had consecutive wins to give the Griffins a 12-6 lead after four bouts, but the Falcons rallied for the win.

Wehner defeated Zachary Beadling, the Region 5 fifth-place finisher at 106 last year, 8-2.

Ostroff had a pin in 58 seconds.

Delsea 39, St. Joseph (Metuchen) 19: A 36-6 run over the final 10 bouts enabled the Crusaders to erase a 13-3 deficit and defeat the Falcons to sweep the high-powered quad.

St. Joseph (Metuchen) is ranked No. 10 in the NJWWA Top 20.

5. Brick Memorial 38, 7. Jackson Memorial 32: A pin by senior Max Wright in the 157-pound bout was a 10-point swing as the Mustangs raced out to a 38-5 lead after eight bouts and held on for the win over the Jaguars.

Wright, wrestling just his second bout of the season, was trailing John Calamia 12-2 in the third period when he took Calamia down and to his back as he turned what was going to be at least a major decision and four points for Jackson Memorial into six points for Brick Memorial.

Brick Memorial built its lead by getting bonus points in all seven of its wins.

Three-time state finalist and 2021 state champion Anthony Santaniello (138), defending state 175-pound champion Harvey Ludington (190) and Ben Szuba (215) also pinned for Brick Memorial.

Jackson Memorial won the final six bouts, including a 4-3 win at 106 by Joseph Weikel over Michael Napolitano on a takedown with 50 seconds left and then a ride out.

Unbeaten heavyweight Ryan Fischer, returning state qualifier Jonathan Espinosa (126) and Lucas Lipari pinned for Jackson Memorial.

4. Raritan 41, Northern Burlington 22: The Rockets won the final four bouts to pull away from what was just a one-point match and record the win over the Greyhounds for the 700th win in program history.

Raritan has won two NJSIAA group championships - Group 2 in 2012 and 2022; four sectional titles, 17 Shore Conference divisional titles and 10 NJSIAA district team championships.

Much of the Rockets' success has come under current head coach Rob Nucci. The late Rick Dunnells also had success coaching Raritan.

Returning state qualifier Braden Kmak (144), Kieran Falzon (190), returning region qualifier and returning state qualifier Ryan Mansueto (126) pinned for Raritan.

4. Raritan 41, 7. Jackson Memorial 27: Ryan Mansueto's pin of Jonathan Espinosa art 126 pounds in a matchup of returning state qualifiers began a match-closing 14-point run over the final three bouts as the Rockets broke away from a 27-27 tie and defeated the Jaguars.

A 4-3 win by unbeaten Alex Delaurier (132) over returning region sixth-place finisher Lucas Lipari clinched the match for the Rockets with a bout remaining.

Returning state qualifier Zach Reilley then closed out the match with a win by technical fall.

Jackson Memorial had tied the match 27-27 with a four-bout 18-point run from heavyweight-120 that began with a pin by Ryan Fischer (heavyweight) and concluded with a pin by Luis Espinosa (120).

Braden Kmak (144 and Logan Acevedo (150 began the match with pins for Raritan.

Robert Mulligan (165) and Kieran Falzon (190) also pinned for the Rockets.

Returning region fifth-place finisher Luke Hamann (175) pinned for the Jaguars.

4. Raritan 38, 5. Brick Memorial 26: A 6-3 win by junior Aidan Davis at 113 pounds over returning region sixth-place finisher Gavin Martin started a 26-3 run over the final six bout as the Rockets rallied from a 23-12 deficit and defeated the Mustangs to sweep the quad.

After Davis' win, Raritan's Matt Erven won by disqualification for a bite at 120. Brick Memorial was also deducted three team points. That turn of events gave Raritan the lead for good at 21-20

Consecutive pins by Ryan Mansueto (126) and unbeaten Alex Delaurier enabled Raritan to build an insurmountable 33-20 lead with two bouts remaining.

Brick Memorial had built its 23-12 lead with a 23-3 six-bout run from 165-106.

Freshman Trey Tallmadge (175) and Garvey Ludington had consecutive pins during that run.

Braden Kmak (150) also pinned for Raritan.

Anthony Santaniello (138) also had a pin for Brick Memorial.

Point Pleasant Boro 38, 6. Lacey 33: A pin by Nate Fletcher (138) in the next-to-last bout clinched the Panthers' win over the two-time defending divisional champion Lions (10-1, 4-1).

Point Boro (7-1, 3-0), which won four straight Class B South championships from 2017-20 and Jackson Liberty (5-2, 3-0) are tied for first place in the division. The two will meet Feb. 1 at Point Boro. Jackson Liberty wrestles at Lacey on Jan. 23.

Fletcher's pin gave Point Boro a 38-27 lead and enable it to forfeit to returning region fifth-place finisher Matt Gauthier in the final bout at 144 pounds.

The Panthers led throughout. They raced out to a 20-0 lead with three bonus points in the first four bouts and by weighing and bumping their lineup up.

Ryan Acquisto (150) began the opening run with a win by technical fall. Tyler Criscuolo (165) and returning state qualifier Jack Thompson (175) concluded the run with pins.

Lacey pulled within 20-15 with three straight wins from 190-heavyweight. Luciano Ferranti (190) and returning state qualifier Matt Coon had pins during that run.

But, three straight wins from 106-120 that included decisions by returning state qualifiers Joey DeAngelo (106) and Frankie Burgio (113) and a pin by Jared Drewes (120) enabled Point Boro to build its lead back up to 32-15.

Consecutive pins by John Downs (126) and Aidan Ott (132) pulled Lacey within 32-27 headed into the 138-pound bout.

Long Branch had pulled within 31-30 headed into the final bout with an 18-point run from 106-126 that included a pin by Joshua Renna (106) and decisions by Ryan Beharry (113) and Javier Guzman (126).

A pin by Thomas Whyte (heavyweight) had given Middletown South a 31-12 lead with five bouts remaining.

Alec Holland (144), Jonathan Dogas (157), returning region champion and three-time state qualifier David Hussey (165) pinned for the Eagles, who led 25-0 after five bouts.

Mattheus Marco Santana (215) also pinned for Long Branch.

A pin by Kenny Wines (215) pulled Manalapan into a 32-32 tie headed into the final bout after a three-bout, 14-point run from 165-190, which included a pin by Kyle Smith (175) and a win by technical fall by returning region champion and three-time region qualifier David Hussey (190) had given Middletown South a 32-26 lead.

2. Christian Brothers Academy 53, Howell 21: Returning state third-place finisher Tyler Barrett (150), returning region qualifier Peter Grippo (190) and returning region champion Rob Canterino (215) pinned during a five-bout, 30-point run from 150-215 that enabled the Colts (5-7, 4-0) to wipe out a 15-5 deficit and defeat Howell (5-5, 2-2).

Rumson-Fair Haven 49, Wall 21: Eamon Fry's 4-2 win over returning state qualifier Michael DiBiase in the 106-pound highlighted the Bulldogs' win over the Crimson Knights.

Fry's win came during an eight-bout, 37-point run from 175-126 that enabled Rumson-Fair Haven (4-3, 3-0) to wipe out an 18-6 deficit.

The run included a 13-4 major decision win by returning region champion and two-time state qualifier Hudson Skove at heavyweight over previously-unbeaten 2021 Central Region 220-pound sixth-place finisher Kei'Sun Sanders. Skove bumped up to heavyweight for the bout.

Alastair Orr (190), Conor Delaney (215), Joaquin DuQue (113) and Julian DuQue (126) all pinned during the decisive run.

5. Brick Memorial 60, Brick 10

1. Southern 72, Central 6: A pin by Riley O'Boyle (215) over Cosmo Zaccaro in a matchup of returning state qualifiers highlighted the Rams' win over the Golden Eagles.

Zacarro defeated O'Boyle two out of the three times the two met last season. He won by major decision in the District 25 final and 6-1 in the Region 7 third-place bout. O'Boyle recorded a 7-5 win in a state wrestleback bout.

Point Pleasant Beach 39, Keansburg 28: P.J. Niethe's pin in the final bout at 126 ppounds, capped a 21-point run over the final four bouts and gave the Garnet Gulls (4-6, 2-1) the win over the Titans (8-1, 3-1).

The result enabled Shore, which has already defeated Point Beach, to clinch at least a tie for the divisional title. It is Shore's first divisional championship since 2019. The Blue Devils can clinch the title outright with a win at Keansburg next Wednesday.

Aidan Loughran (113) and Luke DeBenedett (120) also pinned during Point Pleasant Beach's decisive run.
