Shateah Wetering enters the NCAA transfer portal, roster spot opens for Iowa

After an historic 2022-23 season that included a trip to the title game, Iowa fans are clamoring for a chance to see Caitlin Clark and the Hawkeyes back on the game’s biggest stage.

The proper ending would result with Clark and Co. on top hoisting the national championship trophy. Of course, one half of The Law Firm is moving on from Iowa City.

Monika Czinano exhausted her eligibility and is off to the WNBA after being selected with pick No. 26 by the Los Angeles Sparks. Losing the nation’s top field goal percentage artist means somebody needs to elevate their games.

Candidates are already on campus, such as talented sophomore-to-be Hannah Stuelke or junior-to-be Addison O’Grady. Still, an arrival out of the transfer portal that could provide immediate impact help on either the perimeter or in the post would be a welcome sight.

There was just one problem. Iowa didn’t have a scholarship available for the 2023-24 season. That is, until Chantel Jennings’ report today that forward Shateah Wetering is entering the NCAA transfer portal.

Wetering ends her career at Iowa with 23 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists, three steals and one block. She appeared in 21 games over the course of her Hawkeye career.

It makes sense Wetering wants to find a situation where minutes and floor time are more readily available. After all, she arrived in Iowa City as a three-time all-conference selection and as a two-time Iowa Girls Coaches Association all-state member. She averaged 18.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.9 steals, 1.4 assists and 1.2 blocks per game as a junior.

This frees up a scholarship for one of the top transfer portal names. With Caitlin Clark back for the Hawkeyes alongside fellow starters Kate Martin and Gabbie Marshall, Iowa should be one of the country’s most attractive destinations.

Some of the top transfer portal names include Louisville guard Hailey Van Lith, DePaul forward Aneesah Morrow and Stanford center Lauren Betts.

Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game last season for Louisville. Of course, Van Lith and Clark dueled in the Elite Eight this past season with Iowa ending the Cardinals’ season in a 97-83 Hawkeye win.

Morrow averaged 25.7 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game with the Blue Demons. The 6-foot-1 big had 25 double-doubles in 2022-23.

Meanwhile, Betts arrived at Stanford as the No. 1 recruit nationally per ESPN. The 6-foot-7 center averaged 5.9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in just 9.6 minutes of average floor time.

She chose Stanford over Notre Dame, Oregon, UCLA, UConn and South Carolina coming out of high school.

With this news from Wetering, Iowa fans and national media had plenty of reaction to what the possibilities for the Hawkeyes might now be. And, as there should be, plenty of well wishes for Wetering in the future.
