Seton Catholic girls basketball cancels season a week before it starts due to lack of participation
RICHMOND — There's one less girls basketball team in Wayne County this season.
With just a week before a scheduled tipoff against Park Tudor to begin its season, Seton Catholic athletic director Trent Tremain sent out an email at 7:14 p.m. Friday night, Nov. 3, announcing that the girls basketball season has been canceled due to lack of participation.
"We regret to inform everyone that we have made the difficult decision to cancel our varsity girls basketball season due to a lack of participation," Tremain's email begins. "We also had a very committed girl have an injury that will cause her to likely miss the entire year."
The email went on to say that the school has every intention of having a team next season, with five committed players in addition to the injured player, with five returners next season (4 freshman and a sophomore.)
"We also have several 8th graders currently playing on the junior high team that will move up to the varsity team next year," the email continues. "Unfortunately, the other girls that committed in the spring or joined for a few practices this year did not follow through so we could not have a team. We want to thank coach Troy Titus and his coaching staff for their dedication preparing the team for the season. We are committed to them moving forward as they build our program and prepare for the 2024-25 season."
It has been a few years since the Cardinals have fielded a team. 2018-19 is the last recorded season on John Harrell's Indiana Girls Basketball website, when they went 4-19 overall. They were scheduled to host Park Tudor to begin the season Friday, Nov. 10, before traveling to play Lincoln the following day.
