Seminole Scrapbook: Glenn impacting youth in a career he never wanted to pursue

Lamarr Glenn wasn’t searching a career in education.

It found the former Florida State fullback and four-year letterman (1995-98).

“Education landed on me,” Glenn, 47, said and laughed.

“It’s strange how it has worked out. It wasn’t what I set out to do.

“I always said I would never teach.”

Not only is Glenn completing his 20th year in education and 17th as an Athletic Director, he was recently named Director of Athletics of Fulton County Schools in north-central Georgia.

It’s the state’s most populous county with over a million people and features 20 high schools. The county also includes state-capital Atlanta.

Lamarr Glenn known for leadership skills, approachable manner

Glenn, known for his leadership skills and approachable manner, appreciates the opportunity to impact and inspire youth.

“When you start working in education, you don’t know the impact you have on young people – now I do,” Glenn said.

“I am not the most vocal person, but kids gravitate towards me. Kids I taught years ago are sending me their wedding invitations

“It’s gratifying to see them succeed. You have to keep moving forward.”

Glenn, a native of Ormond Beach, Florida, enjoyed a successful career at FSU and followed older brother Billy Glenn to Tallahassee (1990-94).

Lamarr was named Offensive Team Captain in 1998 and was drafted in the sixth round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Bucs. He didn’t play a snap for the Bucs and entertained playing Arena Football.

A telephone call from former Seminole teammate Corey Brooks changed the course of Glenn’s career.

Glenn moved to Palm Beach County, earned his teaching certificate and was fifth-grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary in Riviera Beach.

“I had never taught a day in life,” Glenn said.

“I was winging it, but I am a fast learner. Education fell on me and I just rode the wave. I really enjoyed it and wanted to give back.”

Glenn’s educational foundation features a bachelor’s degree from FSU, a Master’s in Business Administration from Saint Leo, and an Education Specialist in Leadership degree from Berry College.

He moved into administration as an assistant athletic director at Olympia High School in Orlando, was named athletic director at Wekiva High School in Apopka and moved to Atlanta in 2014.

Glenn’s impact has been felt across the Peach State.

He as name the region’s Athletic Director of the Year at Banneker High and was recently served as athletic director at North Springs Charter. He won the state’s NIAAA Distinguished Service Award for the state of Georgia in 2021 and was named Georgia Selection by Bound Athletics as one of the 50 Most Influential Athletic Administrators.

Glenn, of course, also keeps an eye on the Seminoles FSU is coming off its first 10-win season since 2016 and first bowl win since 2017 under coach Mike Norvell.

He deeply appreciates the opportunity to play for legendary Bobby Bowden and credits coaches and administrators for shaping him personally.

“I think Mike is doing a great job and creating a culture the program got away from," said Glenn, who has been married for 12 years and has a stepdaughter. "The landscape of college football is totally different with NIL and the transfer portal.

“It has been uphill climb but players, I think, are buying in and getting back to the basics.”
