New Rochelle topples Scarsdale, gets to 10-0
It was the biggest test of the season to date for New Rochelle and the Huguenots came ready, grabbed the early momentum with authority and never looked back.
Even when they struggled to make free throws in the closing minutes.
Kas Mirza gave No. 2 New Rochelle a surprising 15-4 lead when he calmly dropped a 3 with 1:24 to go in the first quarter. The Raiders climbed within six in the closing minutes of the half, then gave up seven unanswered points and went into the break trailing 31-18.
Each second-half run by No. 6 Scarsdale was met with a timely bucket from behind the arc.
What it means
New Rochelle has to get comfortable being the Class AAA frontrunner, but this team is built to contend. Malik Gasper and Mirza are headliners surrounded by role players who compete and contribute with genuine passion. Lee Hester, Mathew Sainvil and Sean Thomas make this team go. Scarsdale has dropped five in a row but remains the favorite in Class AA. The Raiders were playing shorthanded with starters Brandon Gibbons and A.J. Booth out with injuries. What this team needs depth and several reserves are getting the quality minutes against quality opposition that will bring increased minutes as the season unfolds.
Box score
New Rochelle (10-0): Mirza 25P; Hester 14P; Gasper 10P, 16R; Sainvil 7P; Izaih Augustine 3P; Kevin Conroy 3P; Sean Thomas 1P.
Scarsdale (3-6): Carlos Rodriguez 24P; Jake Sussberg 11P, 10R; Conner Shigekawa 5P; Daniel Hoey 5P; Oscar Langford 4P.
Quotable
"This is really going to be beneficial for us," Raiders coach Joe Amelio said of the need to go deeper on the bench with the recent injuries. "There are players who did not get minutes early on who are showing they are capable of playing a bigger role and it's opened my eyes. We're going to rely on those guys to not only dictate the tempo and energy coming off the bench to give guys a break, but to play crucial moments."
"It takes five players," Huguenots swingman Kas Mirza said. "Whether is scoring the basketball, getting rebounds, bringing energy, providing leadership, there are so many roles and we have guys who can fill those roles. It makes things a lot easier for us and helps us win games."
