Who advanced? Who's out? What you need to know about PCL, district 1, 12 baseball playoffs

The playoffs have begun in baseball, with district and league tiles up for grabs and spots in the PIAA tournament on the line. Here are the results, recaps and pairings for the baseball tournaments.

Philadelphia Catholic League

First round, May 17

No. 7 Cardinal O'Hara 7, No. 10 Archbishop Carroll 1

No. 8 St. Joseph's Prep 4, No. 9 Archbishop Ryan 2

Quarterfinals, May 20

No. 1 Father Judge 10, No. 8 St. Joseph's Prep 0

No. 2 La Salle 5, 7 Cardinal O'Hara 0

Junior Matt Gannon had an RBI single to key the host Explorers' four-run first inning. Senior Marc DeSimone later added an RBI double. Senior Travis Helmick and juniors Logan Potter and Cole Kochanowicz combined for the three-hit shutout.

No. 6 Roman Catholic 5, No. 3 Bonner-Prendergast 3

May 21

No. 5 Neumann-Goretti 10, No. 4 Archbishop Wood 3

Senior Sean Burke had a solo home run for the host Vikings, who will advance to Class 4A states as one of the top two seeds from District 12. Wood fell behind 6-0 in the game. Junior Patrick Gozdan (triple) and senior Jared Uzdzienski (RBI) each went 2-for-4 for the Vikings, who downed N-G 8-5 during the PCL regular season.

Semifinals, Wednesday, May 24

No. 2 La Salle 6, No. 5 Neumann-Goretti 2

The Explorers scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings, then added three more in the sixth to reach the PCL final. Senior Tristan Helmick pitched the first 4⅓ innings and left with a 3-1 run and the bases loaded. Junior Cole Kochanowicz came on in relief and escaped the jam by allowing just one run to keep La Salle ahead 3-2. La Salle will face top-seeded Father Judge in Saturday morning's championship game.

Final, Saturday, May 27

No. 1 Father Judge 3, No. 2 La Salle 2

Kevin Schmidt had both RBIs for the Explorers with a single and sacrifice fly, but Judge scored the deciding run on a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning. La Salle gave Judge its lone PCL loss 7-2 on May 10. Senior Tristan Helmick and junior Logan Potter shared pitching duties for the Explorers.

First round, Monday, May 22

No. 17 Lower Merion 4, No. 16 Neshaminy 2

Junior Joel Bonner had two hits and senior Robert Harrison added an RBI for host Neshaminy in the season-ending defeat. Junior Evan Krippel (four innings, three earned runs) and sophomore Steven Martin (three innings, one earned run) shared pitching duties.

No. 9 Upper Darby 3, No. 24 Council Rock South 1

Upper Darby pitcher Chris Zupito struck out 18 while throwing a 2-hitter in the home win over CR South.

No. 20 Harry S. Truman 6, No. 13 Wissahickon 3

Truman scored two runs in the second inning and three in the third to upend host Wissahickon for its first district playoff win since defeating Garnet Valley 5-0 12 years ago. Seniors Caleb Wright (2-for-3) and Alex Matlack had two RBIs apiece. Senior Andrew Armstrong earned the pitching victory by striking out 12 in six innings and freshman Austin Allen (two strikeouts) picked up the save with a perfect seventh. The Tigers visit No. 4 Abington on Wednesday.

No. 21 Souderton 4, No. 12 Ridley 0

Seniors Joey Crecca, Krieg Pierce and Ethan Warner had RBI hits for visiting Souderton in the shutout victory. Souderton will visit No. 5 Plymouth Whitemarsh in the second round.

No. 15 West Chester Henderson 4, No. 18 Council Rock North 3

Host Henderson scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win in a walkoff.

No. 23 Quakertown 7, No. 10 Owen J. Roberts 3

Quakertown scored three runs in the second inning and three more in the sixth to win on the road. The Panthers will travel to No. 7 Pennsbury on Wednesday.

No. 14 Central Bucks West 7, No. 19 Downingtown West 6 (8 innings)

Host Central Bucks West recorded a walk-off win with senior Bill Zentmayer (2-for-4) singling in senior Jack Hogenauer (3-for-5 with double, three RBIs) in the bottom of the eighth inning. Senior Alex Jenkinson earned the pitching victory with five shutout innings. The Bucks will visit No. 3 Methacton on Wednesday.

No. 11 Downingtown East 6, No. 22 Garnet Valley 4

Second round, Wednesday, May 24

No. 1 Spring-Ford 12, No. 17 Lower Merion 3

No. 8 Avon Grove 10, No. 9 Upper Darby 0

No. 4 Abington 3, No. 13 Harry S. Truman 2

The host Ghosts earned the walk-off win when junior Mike Judge doubled in senior Matt Worek, who had singled in junior Chase Goodson to tie the game, with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Abington reached Friday's quarterfinals, where it will host Plymouth Whitemarsh. Senior LJ Wolff struck out 14 and only allowed three hits in his complete-game outing. Ryan Cavanaugh had an RBI triple for Truman, which received a fine pitching performance from freshman Austin Allen.

No. 5 Plymouth Whitemarsh 6, No. 21 Souderton 5

Sophomore Connor Klock hit a two-run homer for Souderton. PW scored all six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

No. 2 North Penn 9, No. 15 WC Henderson 0

North Penn put up six runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control on the way to the shutout victory. Junior Ben Farley went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and senior James Mangine was 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs. Sophomore Trevor Lugara scattered six hits over six innings, striking out five with no walks.

No. 23 Quakertown 10, No. 7 Pennsbury 2: After leading 3-2 in the third inning, the Panthers pulled away from the host Falcons to reach Friday's quarterfinals. Quakertown sophomore Cole Reich reached based four times, with a double among his two hits and two walks, while senior Brayden Schuler added two hits, including a double, and junior Tanner Clancy also contributed two hits. Juniors Matt Marsten (four innings) and Cooper Natisin (three) shared the pitching duties. Senior Sam Labrecque paced Pennsbury by going 2-for-2 with a double.

No. 14 Central Bucks West 10, No. 3 Methacton 0

Junior Sam Greer pitched six shutout innings and added two hits plus an RBI in the Bucks' road victory, giving them a berth in Friday's quarterfinals. Sophomore Alex Valdes was 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, while senior Max McGlone had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs. Junior Quinn Illig contributed three hits and an RBI and senior Julio Ermigiotti chipped in two hits and an RBI.

No. 6 Coatesville 2, No. 11 Downingtown East 0

Quarterfinals, Friday, May 26

No. 1 Spring-Ford 13, No. 9 Upper Darby 6

No. 5 Plymouth Whitemarsh 3, No. 4 Abington 1

Sophomore Mason Kishpaugh had an RBI single after junior Chase Goodson (double, triple) had doubled in the top of the seventh inning for Abington, which can still make states with a victory over visiting Quakertown in consolation play.

No. 2 North Penn 4, No. 23 Quakertown 2

Host North Penn advanced to the semifinals and secured a state berth with the victory. Senior James Mangine (3-for-3) hit a pair of doubles and scored the first run, as well as drove in two. Senior Jack Picozzi earned the pitching victory, with junior Henry Wetzel (2-for-3) picking up the save by going the final 1⅓. Junior Tanner Clancy had an RBI single for Quakertown, while junior Cooper Natisin started on the mound and senior Vinny Pellegrini threw a scoreless sixth.

No. 14 Central Bucks West 6, No. 6 Coatesville 1

The Bucks scored two runs in the third and fourth innings on the way to the win, a state berth and a spot in the semifinals at Suburban One League Colonial Division rival North Penn by defeating host Coatesville on Friday night. The Red Raiders scored their run in the bottom of the seventh, as freshman Jacob Greer recorded all but the final out for the Bucks while allowing five hits, striking out six and contributing two RBIs. Senior Bill Zentmayer added two hits and junior Quinn Illig and sophomore Alex Valdes each had an RBI.

Semifinals, Tuesday, May 30

No. 5 Plymouth Whitemarsh at No. 1 Spring-Ford

Buddies and battery: CB West's Ermigiotti, McGlone know each other well as pitcher and catcher

No. 14 CB West at No. 2 North Penn

The Knights won both SOL Colonial meetings against the Bucks this season, prevailing by scores of 12-3 and 5-3.

First-round consolations, Tuesday, May 30

Late-season push: Resilient Quakertown aiming to make school baseball history after 1-7 start

No. 23 Quakertown at No. 4 Abington

The Panthers dropped both SOL Liberty matchups with the Ghosts (6-4, 2-1 in eight innings). The winner qualifies for states.

No. 9 Upper Darby at No. 6 Coatesville, 6:45 p.m.

The Pioneers, who scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning, secured their eighth consecutive district title with the victory. Senior Zach Neff (2-for-3) had a two-run single, junior Sam Laux (2-for-3) contributed a solo home run and sophomore Brayden Kratz (2-for-4) added two doubles. Senior Nate Lapp earned the pitching win by going 6⅔ innings, with senior Cooper Brannon picking up the final out. Freshman Jude Clymer had a two-run single for Faith, which finished second to Dock in the Bicentennial Athletic League.
