See who made the Lafayette Journal & Courier's 2023 small big all-area baseball team

The Lafayette Journal & Courier's all-area baseball teams are comprised of players from the Greater Lafayette area.

Coaches are asked to nominate players from their own team, then a ballot is sent out asking those coaches to vote on the nominated players.

The Journal & Courier's Big School All-Area team is made up of players from Class 3A and 4A programs.

Logan Marsell, McCutcheon (Player of the Year)

The junior outfielder and second baseman led the Mavericks to a North Central Conference championship, hitting .404 with a .500 on base percentage. Marsell displayed power with seven doubles, two triples and three home runs. He drove in 31 runs and scored 24 more, while stealing 16 bases and fielding at a .984 clip.

Matthew Berry, Frankfort

The freshman catcher helped the Hot Dogs win their first regional championship since 1968, hitting .390 with four doubles, one triple and three home runs in addition to 15 runs scored and 17 batted in.

Evan Cooke, West Lafayette

The senior pitcher and third baseman struck out 87 and walked 27 in 45 innings, with a 3.89 earned run average. Cooke was named an Indiana All-Star after hitting .365 with a .515 on base percentage and .964 fielding percentage. He had seven doubles, four triples, two home runs, 33 runs scored and 22 RBI in addition to stealing eight bases.

Cale Coursey, Crawfordsville

The Athenian senior pitcher and first baseman went 8-1 on the mound, compiling a 1.41 earned run average, striking out 101 and walking 33 in 64 2/3 innings. Coursey was equally as dominant at the plate with a .441 batting average, a .522 on base percentage, five doubles, two triples and one home run. Coursey scored 18 runs and drove in 32 more and fielded at better than 91 percent.

Brayson Johns, Rensselaer

The sophomore reached base in 56.9 percent of his plate appearances, hitting .464 with six doubles, two triples and three home runs. Johns scored 21 times and drove in 25 runs.

Jarrod Kirsch, North Montgomery

The Charger junior went 6-2 on the mound with a 1.17 earned run average, striking out 88 and walking 23 in 54 innings while also fielding .977. Kirsch hit .378 with a .545 on base percentage, nine doubles and one triple, driving in 21 and scoring 24 times along with stealing 11 bases.

Jose Lopez, Frankfort

The Hot Dog senior ace pitched Frankfort to its first regional title since 1968 and finished the season with a 7-4 record and 2.04 earned run average, striking out 68 and walking 22 in 79 innings. At the plate, Lopez hit .322 with four doubles and one triple, driving in 13 and scoring 12 runs.

Aiden Marcus, Lafayette Jeff

The junior pitcher went 3-2 with a 2.17 earned run average. Marcus struck out 38 and walked 25 in 48 1/3 innings.

Drew McTagertt, Harrison

The sophomore catcher and outfielder helped lead the Raiders to a sectional championship with a .390 batting average, five doubles, two triples and three home runs. McTagertt stole 22 bases and fielded .962 in addition to scoring 26 runs and driving in 28.

Wyatt Motz, Crawfordsville

The sophomore third baseman hit .455 and had a .487 on base percentage with seven doubles and two triples. Motz also fielded the hot corner at a .913 rate, stole 18 bases, had 23 runs batted in and scored 28 times.

Gavin Owsley, Harrison

The senior pitcher went 5-1 with a 2.16 earned run average and two saves. Owsley tossed 48 2/3 innings, compiling 56 strikeouts and just 18 walks, pitching every game in the postseason to help the Raiders win a sectional crown.

Corbin Payne, Harrison

The senior pitcher logged 45 innings and racked up a 6-2 record with a 2.80 earned run average. He totaled 61 strikeouts and just 25 walks, helping lead the Raiders to a sectional title.

Abram Ritchie, Lafayette Jeff

The senior shortstop hit .357 with five doubles and reached base in better than 45 percent of his plate appearances. Ritchie stole nine bases and fielded .943 with 19 runs scored and 19 RBI.

Tristen Robertson, Twin Lakes

Robertson hit .453 and had a perfect fielding percentage in center during his junior season. He stole 35 bases, scored 38 runs and drove in 26, clubbing five doubles and three triples.

Jack Shaeffer, West Lafayette

The junior hit .386 with a .474 on base percentage. Schaeffer hit six doubles, two triples and five home runs, while driving in 34 runs and scoring 29.

Brody Zimmer, McCutcheon

The senior outfielder was named an Indiana All-Star after hitting .351 with a .440 on base percentage, nine doubles and three home runs. Zimmer fielded .970, drove in 29 runs and also scored 27 runs, helping the Mavericks win a North Central Conference title.
