Section 3 football's top Week Zero football players and games from Friday

NEW HARTFORD 49, SCOTIA-GLENVILLE 14

SCOTIA - The New Hartford Spartans traveled east to start the 2023 football season Friday night and defeated Section II Scotia-Glenville 49-14.

Sophomore quarterback John Vitullo threw touchdown passes covering 52 yards to Peyton Way and 17 to Sal Weller in the first quarter, and added a 26-yard touchdown pass to Cole Raux in the second quarter to put the Spartans up 28-6 at the half. He finished the game with 201 passing yards and four touchdowns.

Raux, a senior, ran for a varsity career-high 218 yards on 10 carries and scored on runs covering 81 and 62 yards. Weller had a second touchdown on an 11-yard run.

New Hartford plays on the road again next Friday at Chittenango.

ADIRONDACK 36, CAMDEN 6

BOONVILLE - The members of Adirondack's new offensive personnel picked up where their predecessors left off and the Class C Widcats started their new season with a 36-6 win over Class B Camden.

Junior John Hennessey, previously a wide receiver, stepped in at quarterback and completed five of the nine passes he threw for 33 yards, including a 12-yard pass to Dalton Miranda for the game's first touchdown. Hennessey also passed for two conversions and led Adirondack with 182 rushing yards and another touchdown on 14 carries.

Miranda ran for 57 yards on 14 carries for the Wildcats.

On defense, Giovanni Foster led Adirondack with 10 tackles. Croneiser intercepted a pass, Hennessey recovered a fumble, and Wyatt Kratzenburg had a sack.

The Wildcats had shut out one team last fall during an 8-0 start to the season, and blanked two others in Class D when they started the 2021 season 9-0.

Adirondack travels to Syracuse next Friday for a game against Bishop Ludden/Syracuse Academy of Science. Camden plays its home opener that night against Westhill.

CENTRAL VALLEY ACADEMY 50, GLOVERSVILLE 28

ILION - The Central Valley Academy Thunder put up their highest point total since 2014 Friday when they started the new season with a 50-28 Week Zero win over Section II Gloversville.

Last fall's 48-6 win over Oneida had been the Thunder's highest score since beating Phoenix 60-0 in a 2014 crossover game. Central Valley Academy had also put up 50 against South Jefferson in 2013.

The Thunder had 35 points at halftime at the Diss Memorial Complex Friday. Thomas Jacquays opened the scoring with a touchdown run for Central Valley Academy and his conversion pass from Brady Moreau kept the Thunder on top 8-6 before Logan Hewitt ran 28 yards for one touchdown late in the first quarter and 24 for another early in the second.

Moreau threw a touchdown pass to Connor Dempsey and ran two yards for a score in the last minute of the second quarter to put the Thunder up 35-13.

Jacquays ran for two touchdowns and caught another conversion pass in the second half, finishing the game with 209 yards on 24 carries to lead his team. Hewitt ran 10 times for 100 yards, and Moreau completed four of the six passes he threw.

The Thunder travels to play at the Syracuse Institute of Technology Friday.

CHITTENANGO 61, VERNON-VERONA-SHERRILL 0

VERNON - Chittenango scored four touchdowns in the first quarter and led 41-0 at halftime on the way to Friday's 61-0 victory over Vernon-Verona-Sherrill.

Quarterback Jack Lamphere threw two touchdown passes to Hunter Taylor and ran nine yards for a touchdown of his own. Brayden Smith and Kyle Wehrlin each added two touchdown runs. The Bears capped their scoring with a punt return for a touchdown by Robert Pierce and a 68-yard run by Shaun Eddy.

George Lighthall led Vernon-Verona-Sherrill with 36 rushing yards.

The Red Devils play on the road next week at Oswego while Chittenango plays its home opener against New Hartford.

SKANEATELES 28, LITTLE FALLS 7

LITTLE FALLS - The Skaneateles Lakers took a two-touchdown lead in the first quarter on the way to a 28-7 victory over the Little Falls Mounties.

The Lakers scored twice again in the third quarter and led 28-0 before Little Falls broke through and scored with a Jackson Hummel-to-Xavier Dunn touchdown pass in the fourth.

Hummel, a junior starting at quarterback for the first time, completed 14 of 23 passes for 149 yards and the touchdown, and also led the Mounties in rushing with 13 carries for 54 yards. Dom Izzo caught five passes for 50 yards and Dunn had 46 yards on three catches.

Dominick Caraccio had two two-yard touchdown runs for Skaneateles. Jack Peenstra and Ethan Hunt each ran for one score.

Little Falls plays on the road next week at Solvay.

JACKSON HUMMEL, Little Falls - Completed 14 of 23 passes for 149 yards with one touchdown and led the Mounties with 54 rushing yards in his first varsity quarterbacking start.

THOMAS JACQUAYS, Central Valley Academy - Senior ran for 209 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries and paired with Logan Hewitt (10 carries, 100 yards) to give Central Valley Academy two 100-yard rushers as the Thunder scored 50 points for the first time since the 2014 season.

DOM and CJ JONES, Mt. Markham - Each brother ran for two touchdowns and Dom led the Mustangs with 100 rushing yards. Teammate Thomas Doremus also scored two touchdowns.

COLE RAUX, New Hartford - Senior ran for 218 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries and added a third touchdown on a pass from John Vitullo.

JOHN VITULLO, New Hartford - Sophomore quarterback completed eight of 15 passes for 201 yards with half of his completions going for touchdowns, including three in the first half of a 49-14 victory. He threw touchdown passes to four different receivers in his first varsity start - Cole Raux, Tommy Vitagliano, Peyton Way and Sal Weller.
