WESTMORELAND/ORISKANY 46, HARPURSVILLE/AFTON 7

WESTMORELAND - The Bulldogs from Westmoreland and Oriskany scored 33 points in the second quarter Saturday and started their season with a 46-7 victory over Harpursville/Afton from Section IV.

The visitors actually scored first and the teams were tied at 7 after the first quarter.

Cameron Rautenstrauch, whose 11-yard touchdown run had helped Westmoreland/Oriskany tie the score in the first quarter, ran for three more touchdowns in the second quarter and added another on a pass reception. The junior ran for 153 yards on 11 carries and gained 58 more on three pass receptions from Dylan Williams. His touchdown runs covered eight, three and three yards in the second quarter and Williams' touchdown pass covered 50 yards.

Williams, a freshman making his varsity debut, completed seven of 11 passes for 157 yards and threw a 17-yard touchdown to Gino Marangi during the second quarter. He ran for 71 yards on four carries while Jack Williams had seven carries for 64 yards.

Jack Williams capped the scoring with an 11-yard touchdown run in the second half.

Westmoreland/Oriskany plays at Mt. Markham Friday.

ROME FREE ACADEMY 23, EAST SYRACUSE-MINOA 20

SYRACUSE - Rome Free Academy's Black Knights took a lead with its defense and defeated East Syracuse-Minoa 23-20 on the road to start its season Saturday.

Surafia Norries recovered a fumble in the end zone and the Black Knights recorded a safety to build a 9-0 halftime lead. The teams traded touchdowns in the second half but Rome Free Academy never surrendered its lead.

Quarterback Evan Carlson-Stephenson completed 11 of 22 passes for 208 yards and threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah DeJean after East-Syracuse had scored its first touchdown in the third quarter. Carlson-Stephenson ran a sneak for a touchdown to make the score 23-14 in the fourth quarter.

DeJean caught four passes for 59 yards while Jaiden Holmes 126 yards on his four receptions. Holmes and Norries each intercepted a pass on defense.

Micah Combs ran for 191 yards on 23 carries and scored two of the East-Syracuse-Minoa touchdowns, one on a 67-yard run. Nick Commisso threw a touchdown pass to Damon Jones in the fourth quarter; Jones caught seven passes for 113 yards.

Rome Free Academy plays at home Friday against Fowler. East Syracuse-Minoa is home again Friday for its game against Whitesboro.

SHAKER 25, WHITESBORO 15

TROY - The Whitesboro Warriors were held scoreless through the first half and were unable to catch up against Section II Shaker at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Shaker led 19-0 at halftime and won 25-15.

Quarterback Kyle Meier had two short touchdown runs for Whitesboro, one in the third quarter and one in the fourth.

Whitesboro travels to greater Syracuse Friday for a game at East Syracuse-Minoa.

SHERBURNE-EARLVILLE 26, BAINBRIDGE-GUILFORD 20, overtime

HAMILTON - Aaron Key and Ethan Shaw each scored two touchdowns for Sherburne-Earlville in the Marauders' 26-20 season-opening victory over Section IV Bainbridge-Guilford at Colgate University Saturday.

Shaw ran the ball 15 times for 65 yards while backfield partner Nick Hull had 120 yards on 18 carries.

Key scored touchdowns on both of his receptions on balls thrown by Darren Miles who was 7-for-10 for 84 yards. Key had 53 of those yards. Hull caught four passes for 27 yards.

Sherburne-Earville pays on the road Thursday at Port Byron.

SAUQUOIT VALLEY 38, UNADILLA VALLEY 6

Saturday's Top Performers

SEAN BURDICK, West Canada Valley - Senior started at quarterback for the first time and threw three touchdown passes while running for two other scores. He completed eight of 11 passes for 200 yards.

EVAN CARLSON-STEPHENSON, Rome Free Academy - Senior quarterback passed for 208 yards and threw a touchdown pass to Isaiah DeJean, and added a rushing touchown in a three-point victory.

IAIN FARBER, West Canada Valley - Senior caught touchdown passes covering 35 and 58 yards and finished with four receptions for 133 yards.

JAIDEN HOLMES, Rome Free Academy - Senior caught four passes for 126 yards and intercepted a pass on defense.

AARON KEY and ETHAN SHAW, Sherburne-Earlville - Senior teammates each scored two touchdowns in an overtime victory.

KYLE MEIER, Whitesboro - Quarterback ran for both of his team's touchdowns.

SURAFIA NORRIES, Rome Free Academy - Sophomore recovered a fumble for a touchdown and also intercepted a pass.

CAMERON RAUTENSTRAUCH, Westmoreland/Oriskany - Junior scored five touchdowns before halftime in a 46-7 victory. He ran for 153 yards and four scores, and added a fifth touchdown on a pass play. Four of his touchdowns came in the second quarter.

DYLAN WILLIAMS, Westmoreland/Oriskany - Freshman quarterback threw for 157 yards and two touchdowns in his first varsity game.
