Feb. 23—ALBERT LEA — Both teams had chances in the first overtime.

Both teams had chances in the second overtime. Albert Lea just happened to be the team to get one of those chances to go, first.

The fourth-seeded Tigers scored on a rush 6:32 into the second overtime — the goal by Connor Pirsig — to top fifth-seeded Lourdes 3-2 in a Section 1, Class 1A boys hockey quarterfinal game at Albert Lea City Arena on Thursday night.

Lourdes entered the third period with a 2-0 lead, and held a 2-1 lead with fewer than three minutes to play. But Albert Lea's Eli Farris scored with 2:13 remaining in the third period to force overtime.

Both goalies were excellent in the extra periods; Lourdes' Xander Carter-Kleven made seven of his 27 saves in the overtimes. Albert Lea's Ledger Stadheim made nine of his 31 stops in the extra periods.

Lourdes built a 2-0 lead on goals by Landon Spicer and Vinny Harens in the second period. Albert Lea cut that deficit in half on a Zaden Brua goal 51 seconds into the third.

Lourdes' season ends at 9-17-0 overall. The Eagles say goodbye to a talented 12-player senior class that played a lot of games in purple and gold — Carter-Kleven, Nels Pierson, Peyton Loeslie, Andrew Haworth, Jack Fitzgerald, AJ Ritter, Colin Quimby, Owen Bruining, Finley Chase, Eli Araoz, Liam Barry and Alex Hanson.

Albert Lea advances to Saturday's 5 p.m. section semifinal against top-seeded Northfield at the Rochester Recreation Center.

KASSON — Waseca struck first, but Dodge County answered quickly and often in the second period to take control of a Section 1-1A quarterfinal game at Dodge County Ice Arena and pull away for a 5-3 victory on Thursday.

The No. 2-seeded Wildcats were paced by talented senior Gryff Funke, who recorded his fourth hat trick of the year, scoring his 40th, 41st and 42nd goals. He scored twice in the second period, around a Dylan Klomps goal, to turn a 1-0 deficit after one period into a 3-1 lead after two.

The teams then traded goals twice in the third.

Jude Gehring scored 2:26 in for Waseca, but Funke completed his hat trick 2:22 later, thanks to Brett Ludvigsen's second assist of the night.

After Brayden Hesch-Priem scored with 16 seconds to go, Ludvigsen sealed the win with his first goal and third point of these playoffs, scoring the final goal with 4 seconds remaining.

Gideon Ellinghysen added two assists for the Wildcats (18-7-1 overall), who will play No. 3-seeded La Crescent-Hokah at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in a Section 1-1A semifinal game at the Rochester Recreation Center.

Jackson Roethler made 28 saves for the Wildcats, including 12 in the second period.

Seventh-seeded Waseca closes its season at 15-12-0.

DODGE COUNTY 5, WASECA 3

La CRESCENT — Noah Gillette had a hat trick and two assists, Wyatt Farrell added two goals and two assists and the third-seeded La Crescent-Hokah Lancers beat rival Winona 7-5 in front of a packed house at La Crescent Community Ice Arena, in a Section 1, Class 1A quarterfinal game on Thursday.

The victory extends the Lancers' program-record setting season, helps them improve to 24-2-0 overall and puts them into Saturday's section semifinal game against No. 2 seed Dodge County at 7 p.m. at the Rochester Recreation Center.

Farrell's two goals also increase his career goals total to 194, which is just two away from tying former Little Falls star Ben Hanowski's state record of 196.

More importantly for the Lancers, they'll advance to play Dodge County for a second time this season. The Wildcats beat the Lancers 5-2, back on Dec. 9, at La Crescent.

Thursday, the Lancers found a way to beat a Winhawks team that was 6-2-1 in its previous nine games. La Crescent-Hokah led 2-0 after one period and 4-3 after two.

Teis Larsen continued his torrid scoring pace for Winona, finishing his senior season with a hat trick. He had 45 goals and 84 points this winter, the latter number second in the state only to Farrell, who now has a state-best 50 goals and 90 points.

Charlie Wieser made 26 saves in the win Thursday, while Michael Dubek made 30 stops for the Winhawks, who end their season 16-8-1.

La CRESCENT-HOKAH 7, WINONA 5

NORTHFIELD — Northfield star Kam Kaiser made the most of his final home game. The Raiders senior recorded a hat trick and two assists in the top-seeded team's 9-2 win against eighth-seeded Faribault.

In the process, Kaiser set the Northfield career records for hat tricks and goals. He also propelled his team into Saturday's 5 p.m. Section 1, Class 1A semifinal game, against fourth-seeded Albert Lea at the Rochester Recreation Center.

Faribault led 2-1 after one period, but the Raiders scored five times on 21 shots in the second to pull away. Kaiser completed his hat trick 11:31 into the second period, a goal that made it a 5-2 game.

Jake Geiger also had a hat trick and an assist for Northfield, and Max Frank made 22 saves.

Dustin Boyd made 44 saves for the Falcons.
