SEC baseball power rankings after Week 2 of SEC play

LSU, Florida and Vanderbilt have separated themselves not only from the SEC but from much of the rest of the country.

All three of them are in the top five in national polls, and rightfully so. LSU took a right hook to the chin in Game 1 against Arkansas, but it flipped the script in Games 2 and 3 as it outscored the Razorbacks 26-7 in a doubleheader.

The Gators swept Ole Miss in Oxford for the first time since 1988. Jac Caglianone is one of the most electrifying players in the country. The Vandy boys are just so fundamentally sound. They make tough plays look routine.

Also, a special shoutout to South Carolina, they are one of the hottest teams in the country right now. Here’s how our full power rankings shake out after two conference series.

Mississippi State (14-11, 0-6 SEC)

It was an ugly weekend in Starkville, Mississippi. The Bulldogs welcomed the Vandy boys into town and the Commodores outscored State 55-15 in their three-game series. I don’t know what is going on with Mississippi State but it is not going well so far.

Georgia (15-9, 1-5 SEC)

Game 3 between Georgia and Auburn looked like a rewind back to football season. The ‘Dawgs won by three touchdowns. Games 1 and 2 didn’t go their way though as they lost Game 1 on a walk-off and lost Game 2 6-3.

Auburn (16-7-1, 2-4 SEC)

Auburn took the series against Georgia at Plainsman Park last weekend, but the Tigers are still at the bottom of the barrel in a loaded SEC. Their schedule doesn’t get any easier as they travel to Gainesville to take on the Florida Gators this weekend.

Texas A&M (15-9, 1-5 SEC)

I don’t think the Aggies are a bad baseball team, they just were dealt a rough hand with their first two conference opponents being LSU and Tennessee. They took a game from LSU and they were close to taking one or two games from Tennessee. We will see how the Vols do against Ole Miss this weekend.

Alabama (19-6, 2-4 SEC)

The Tide dropped the series to the red-hot Kentucky Wildcats in Tuscaloosa last weekend. Despite that, Alabama still posts the third-best record in the SEC West. They will travel to Arkansas this weekend to take on the Razorbacks.

Ole Miss (15-9, 0-6 SEC)

“Ole Miss above Alabama? Are you crazy?” Let me explain. I believe Ole Miss is a better baseball team with a higher ceiling than Alabama. It suffered from the same scheduling challenges as Texas A&M. The Rebels ran into a couple of buzzsaws in Vanderbilt and Florida, two teams ranked inside the top five nationally. The Rebels will get it together and be just fine.

Tennessee (19-6, 3-3 SEC)

Tennessee bounced back this weekend as it swept Texas A&M. I’m still unsure what to make of this Vols team but we will find out a lot this weekend when it travels to Baton Rouge to take on LSU.

Missouri (17-6, 3-3 SEC)

The Missouri vs. South Carolina series lived up to the hype and more. Both teams traded blows and two out of three games could’ve gone either way. Mizzou came out on the short end of the stick as they got swept. It is still above Tennessee because it swept the Vols in Week 1 of conference play.

Kentucky (21-3, 5-1 SEC)

The Wildcats are off to a hot start this season. They’re 21-3 with a loss to Wright State, Elon and Alabama. They have taken advantage of their easy schedule to start the year. They will host Missouri this weekend.

Arkansas (20-4, 4-2 SEC)

The Razorbacks powered their way to a win in Game 1 against LSU last weekend in Baton Rouge, but they got stomped in Games 2 and 3. The injuries to some of their best pitchers are hindering just how good this team could really be.

South Carolina (23-2, 6-0 SEC)

The Gamecocks are hotter than Myrtle Beach in the middle of July. Had they not dropped their midweek game against Charlotte, they may be higher on this list. In the last two weeks, they have swept Georgia and Missouri.

Vanderbilt (19-5 6-0 SEC)

The Vandy Boys are on a roll. They’ve won seven games in a row and they outscored Mississippi State 55-15 last weekend in Starkville. They are firmly in the top five of the national rankings and it looks like they will stay there for a while.

Florida (22-4, 5-1 SEC)

The Gators swept Ole Miss in Oxford for the first time since 1988. Jac Caglianone is easily a top-three player in the country and is the Gators’ version of Shohei Ohtani. UF will face Auburn this weekend before a heated battle with Tennessee.

LSU (21-3, 4-2 SEC)

[autotag]Tommy White[/autotag], [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag]. Three incredible baseball players lead this stacked team. After taking one on the chin in extra innings against the Razorbacks in Game 1, the Tigers rebounded to run-rule Arkansas in Game 2 and won 14-5 in Game 3. Their ability to rebound after a tough loss was outstanding. This team is special.
