SEC baseball power rankings after Week 6: How did chaotic weekend impact league pecking order?

Last weekend was probably the wildest for SEC baseball so far this season. We had a few surprises as well as some teams flexing their muscles.

As far as surprises go, how about Georgia sweeping Arkansas and Tennessee sweeping Vanderbilt? UGA has flipped the script of their whole season lately as they took a series against Kentucky a couple of weeks ago and now have swept a good Razorbacks team.

The Volunteers looked to have their back against the wall after getting swept by the Hogs and then losing their midweek game to Tennessee Tech. They came out swinging against the Commodores, though, as they outscored Vandy 31-9 in three games.

LSU flexed its muscles as it got its first conference sweep of the season, and South Carolina proved it is nearly unbeatable at home as it swept the Florida Gators.

Here’s how everything stands in our power ranking of league teams after Week 6.

Ole Miss (21-19, 3-15 SEC)

Just when it looked like Ole Miss would take a game from LSU, Hayden Travinski hit the Rebels with a UNO reverse card. The Rebels play Mississippi State in their midweek game before playing Georgia this weekend.

Missouri (23-16, 5-13 SEC)

It was a rough weekend for the Tigers in Columbia as Missouri was swept by the Crimson Tide. With that series loss, Missouri is now in last place in the SEC East. It will travel to Gainesville to take on the Gators this weekend.

Mississippi State (23-17, 6-12 SEC)

Talk about a series of what could’ve been for Mississippi State. The Bulldogs had a 7-0 lead on Auburn in Game 3 of the series, but they let the Tigers come back and win the game to take the series 2-1. State will have a chance to improve its record with a game against Ole Miss on Tuesday night.

Georgia (23-17, 7-11 SEC)

“That coach up in Athens got them boys playing pretty good ball.”

The ‘Dawgs are on a roll lately. They swept Arkansas last weekend after taking the series from Kentucky two weeks ago. There’s a good chance that Georgia can find itself 10-11 in the conference after playing Ole Miss this weekend.

Auburn (23-16-1, 7-11 SEC)

Auburn’s seven-run comeback win against Mississippi State on Sunday was its largest comeback in SEC play since a nine-run comeback against the Bulldogs in 2010. It was a win that the Tigers desperately needed to keep their SEC Tournament hopes alive.

Tennessee (26-14, 8-10 SEC)

After being swept by Arkansas and losing their midweek game to Tennessee Tech, things were looking bleak for the Vols. Especially with them welcoming one of the hottest teams into Knoxville that weekend. How would the Vols respond to having their backs against a wall? They came out swinging. Tennessee swept Vanderbilt and outscored the Commodores 31-9 in the three-game series.

Alabama (29-12, 9-9 SEC)

The Crimson Tide took a trip to Columbia, Missouri, and swept the Tigers in a three-game series. The Tide is now tied with Texas A&M for third in the SEC West. The only problem is that Alabama travels to Baton Rouge to take on LSU this weekend.

Texas A&M (25-15, 9-9 SEC)

The Aggies continued their conference series win streak after taking a doubleheader against Kentucky last Saturday. They’ll travel to Fayetteville to take on a reeling Arkansas team this weekend.

Arkansas (30-10, 11-7 SEC)

Arkansas carried the best record in the SEC West into last weekend but then was swept by the Georgia Bulldogs. The Hogs will welcome Texas A&M into town this weekend as they try to rebound.

Kentucky (30-9, 11-7 SEC)

The Wildcats dropped two out of three games against Texas A&M at home. They have a busy week ahead as Kentucky takes on Louisville for its midweek matchup and then will travel to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt this weekend.

Vanderbilt (29-11, 13-5 SEC)

Vandy had their roughest week of the season last week as the Commodores went 0-4. It all started with a 10-2 loss at home to Indiana State. They then took a trip to Knoxville to take on Tennessee where they were outscored by the Volunteers 31-9 as they got swept. They will try to rebound this weekend against Kentucky.

Florida (31-10, 11-7 SEC)

The Gators took a trip to Columbia to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks last weekend, and it did not go well for Florida. Carolina swept the Gators as they were outscored 25-10 in the three-game series. The Gators will take on North Florida for their midweek game before playing against Missouri this weekend.

South Carolina (34-6, 13-4 SEC)

South Carolina has played the most interesting series in the SEC for the past two weekends. They dropped two out of three games on the road at Vanderbilt two weeks ago but they welcomed Florida into town and swept them last weekend. The Gamecocks now sit alone atop the SEC East standings and are now ranked as high as No. 2 in a couple of baseball polls.

LSU (32-7, 12-5 SEC)

LSU swept their first conference series of the season after Travinski pulled out some heroics in the top of the ninth inning to beat Ole Miss in Game 3. The Tigers will play Nicholls on Tuesday night at 6:30 before welcoming Alabama into town this weekend.
