Seahawks, coach Pete Carroll thank Russell Wilson as Broncos trade is finalized

Russell Wilson was officially traded to the Denver Broncos on Wednesday afternoon, ending his impressive 10-year run with the Seattle Seahawks.

While Seahawks officials and coach Pete Carroll all made it known that they didn’t push for such a trade, they made sure to thank Wilson after the trade was finalized at the start of the new league year.

“While Russell made it clear he wanted this change, he made Seattle proud and we are grateful for his decade of leadership on and off the field,” Seahawks chair Jody Allen said. “We look forward to welcoming our new players and everyone being fully engaged while working our hardest every single day. I trust our leadership to take us into the future and know we all wish Russell the very best.”

The Seahawks sent Wilson and a fourth-round draft pick to Denver in exchange for tight end Noah Fant, defensive end Shelby Harris, quarterback Drew Lock and three future draft picks.

Wilson apparently had a no-trade clause in his contract, which he was only willing to waive for the Broncos.

“As Jody stated, Russ’ desire in doing something different afforded the organization an opportunity to compete in multiple ways,” Carroll said, in part. “He has always been the ultimate competitor whose leadership and consistency helped shape our culture. Our franchise has won a lot of games and we will always be grateful for the exciting moments and incredible records.”

Wilson threw for more than 37,000 yards and 292 touchdowns over his 10-season run with the Seahawks while compiling a 104-53-1 overall record. He’s been their starting quarterback since they took him in the third round of the 2012 draft, and led them to a Super Bowl win and another Super Bowl appearance.

The 33-year-old’s career, though, is on the back half. And after a tough 7-10 season last year, it’s easy to see why he was ready for a change. The Broncos, with Wilson now leading the way, seem to be in a perfect spot this fall.
