Seals pass their way to another rout

Oct. 6—MILL HALL — The middle part of Selinsgrove's season has afforded the Seals a chance to work on some things to get sharper for the upcoming District 4 Class 4A playoffs.

Friday night in a Heartland Athletic Conference-Division I game with Central Mountain, the passing game was the main focus against the Wildcats.

And it looked pretty good.

Mark Pastore completed 5-of-7 passes for 151 yards and one score, while the Selinsgrove offense scored eight touchdowns in 20 first-half plays as the Seals rolled to a 49-14 victory over the Wildcats. With the win, the Seals clinch a tie with Jersey Shore for the Division I title.

"We wanted to work on the passing game. We ran some two-minute drill, and some plays the coach Mike Ferriero called on the field," Selinsgrove coach Derek Hicks said. "I thought Mark threw some great balls."

The Seals have outscored their last four opponents 208-34, and started quickly again against Central Mountain.

Tucker Teats (6 carries, 110 yards) scored from 17 yards out to cap a four-play, 40-yard drive after Teats returned the opening kickoff 26 yards, and a 15-yard penalty on the Wildcats. Pastore found Gavin Bastian (3 catches, 100 yards) on a third-and-5 for 18 yards to set up the Teats score.

A quick three-and-out by the Selinsgrove defense, and the Seals went quick on the next possession, covering 72 yards in just four plays with Teats catching a 14-yard TD pass. Bastian had a 44-yard catch on the drive, and the Seals led 14-0 with 7:30 left in the first quarter

A poor snap on a punt set Selinsgrove up on the Central Mountain 1, and Ethan Miller punched it on the next play for a 21-0 lead with 6:03 left in the first quarter.

After another quick three-and-out, Teats went 55 yards for a third score of the quarter, and a 28-0 lead with 3:41 left in the first quarter.

"We have a lot of fun during the week. This is a great group of kids," Hicks said. "But when they get on the football field, they take care of business."

Central Mountain put together its best drive of the game so far to end the first quarter, crossing into Selinsgrove territory for the first time, but Aiden Lewis' sack for the Seals on fourth down ended the threat.

Pastore found Bastian for 38 yards down to the Central Mountain 11 to set up Teats' 6-yard TD run with 10:26 left in the first half to push the lead to 35-0.

Miller scored his second 1-yard TD plunge when Andrew Sassaman was ruled down at the goal line after a 37-yard pass from Pastore.

The final touchdown for Selinsgrove made it 49-0 with 5:48 left in the first half. Teats got free for a 28-yard gain to the Central Mountain 31, but was stripped of the ball. The ball bounced right to Sassaman, who returned the fumble 31 yards for a score.

The Wildcats ran most of the final 5:48 of the first half clock, before Thomas Sprague found Conner Foltz for a 42-yard TD with 2.5 seconds left in the first half to spoil the Seals' shutout bid.
