Seahawks fall back to .500 with 30-23 loss to Steelers
The Seattle Seahawks went into Sunday facing two must win games. The first of which was a home showdown against the hated Pittsburgh Steelers. Unfortunately, Seattle’s recent win-streak has now ended at two games, thanks to a 30-23 loss. The Seahawks now fall to 8-8, which is an identical record to where they were in Week 17 last year.
Seattle’s defensive collapse continued in dreadful fashion against the Steelers, who scored points on six of their ten total possessions. Except it was worse than that, as two possessions were end of half situations to just drain the clock. The Seahawks forced only one punt all game.
Coming out of halftime, Seattle did march down the field to tie the game at 17-17 with a Jason Myers field goal. Unfortunately, Pittsburgh immediately took a 24-17 lead on their following drive. The Seahawks settled for another field goal to make it only a 24-20 deficit at the start of the fourth quarter.
Things were starting to look promising when Seattle held the Steelers to a field goal to keep the game 27-20. Unfortunately, Geno Smith fumbled on the first play of the drive, which was recovered by Pittsburgh at the Seahawks 16 yard line. A field goal from the Steelers made it a 30-20 game with under five minutes to go, essentially putting the game out of reach.
The Seahawks had a final, last gasp effort kicking their third field goal of the game to make it the 30-23 final score we see now. But a failed onside kick and an inability to stop Pittsburgh’s offense late sealed the deal.
As of now, Seattle still holds on to the final Wild Card spot. But perhaps not for long. The 7-8 Packers and 7-8 Vikings play each other tonight. Unless they both some how tie, one is going to move ahead of Seattle.
The Seahawks will now head to the Valley of the Sun to play an Arizona Cardinals team that just upset the Eagles in Philadelphia today.
The vibes, they are not great.
