Seacoast Roundup: Two-out magic lifts Portsmouth baseball past defending state champions

DERRY – The Portsmouth High School baseball team entered Wednesday’s game at Pinkerton Academy, the defending Division I state champion, riding a three-game losing streak.

The Clippers left with arguably their biggest win of the season.

With two outs in the eighth inning, Gar Hindle doubled to left field and scored on a Boden Driscoll single to left, giving the Clippers a 4-3 lead.

Elliot Miles then got the Astros in order in the bottom of the inning and Portsmouth improved to 11-5 on the season with a 4-3 win. Pinkerton is now 12-4.

Miles was summoned to pitch the seventh inning, protecting a 3-2 lead. The Astros tied the game on a two-out Jacob Albert single. However, following an intentional walk to load the bases, Miles struck out Jackson Marshall to force extra innings.

Portsmouth junior Jake Carlisle allowed five hits and one earned run over six innings, while striking out three.

Matthew Minckler had two hits and scored two runs for the Clippers, while Hindle also had two hits. Miles had a hit and two RBIs.

BASEBALL

Winnacunnet 12 

Trinity 0 

MANCHESTER – Evan Gaffney and Miles Pratt both had three hits and two RBIs as Winnacunnet improved to 12-4 with its second straight five-inning Division I shutout.

Ethan Nowak allowed three hits and struck out eight over four innings, earning the win.

Nowak (two hits, two runs, RBI), Timmy Knight (two hits, two RBIs), Jackson Larck (hit, two runs), Jake Fredericks (hit, RBI, run), Brady Thompson (hit, RBI, run), and Alex Santora (hit, run) all contributed in the win.

Exeter 3 

Memorial 2 

EXETER – Cam Snee had two hits and an RBI as Exeter improved to 12-3 with this Division I win.

Cam Keaveney had one hit and one RBI for the Blue Hawks, while Jakob Schwarz and Jakob Mikhitarian each had a hit.

George Young scattered seven hits over six innings, striking out six and earning the win.

Dover 15

Timberlane 4

PLAISTOW - The Green Wave scored four runs in the first inning, six in the second and five in the fifth in this five-inning, Division I win.

Dover (6-7) had six hits and drew 17 walks from four Timberlane pitchers.

Charlie Kubiet had two hits for Dover, while Brett Davis, Jacob Lapierre, Timmy MacGregor, and Grant Davis all had one.

Grant Davis had three RBIs in the win, while brother, Brett, and MacGregor both had two. Alex Cook earned the win, allowing two hits and two earned runs over three innings.

Somersworth 6

Berlin 3 

BERLIN - Simon Grandmason had two hits and an RBI, Lukas Kelly had two hits, and Logan Perrault had one hit and two RBIs, leading Somersworth to this Division III win.

Will Sneddon and Cam Dubois each had a hit and an RBI for the Hilltoppers, while Thurston Boilard had two hits, and Zephan Yoder and Andrew Cushing both had one.

Perrault earned the complete-game win, allowing one earned run and six hits over seven innings, striking out two.

Newmarket 12 

Farmington 0 

NEWMARKET – Nick Nigro struck out 14 and didn’t allow a hit over six innings in this Division IV win for Newmarket (13-2).

Alex Dyer and Matt Napoletano both had two hits and drove in two for the Mules, while Graham Willerer (two hits, three runs), Cam Moran (hit, two RBIs), Parker Sweitzer (hit, RBI, run) and David Bond (hit) led Newmarket.

SOFTBALL

Concord 4 

Exeter 1 

CONCORD – Concord handed the Blue Hawks their first loss in more than a year in this Division I game. Both teams are now 14-1 on the season.

Kristen Bickford, Avery Allard and Madi Paige all had singles in the seventh for the Blue Hawks, but Concord made a diving catch in the infield, ending the threat and game. Annie Christiana and Edy Crawford both doubled for Exeter.

Exeter’s Kristen Beebe allowed seven hits over six innings, striking out five.

Winnacunnet 21 

Trinity 2 

HAMPTON - Chloe Cunningham allowed one hit and struck out seven in this five-inning, Division I win for the Warriors.

Cunningham had a triple, and teammates Maeva Shapiro, cay Adams, Arden Langmaid, Joslyn Snow all had doubles.

St. Thomas 19

Winnisquam 0

TILTON – The Saints improved to 13-0 on the season with this Division III, five-inning win.

Ashleigh von der Linden had five hits, including two home runs and 10 RBIs. She also scored four runs, and now has 11 home runs on the season.

Abbie Gaynor had four hits, including three doubles, and two RBIs for the Saints, while Elizabeth Flynn had four hits, including two doubles, and scored five runs. Abby Kosko had three hits, and Caroline Mollica, Alaina Bolduc and Kaity Kelly all had one.

Gaynor struck out seven and didn’t allow a hit over three innings. She was relieved by von der Linden, who struck out five over two no-hit innings.

Marshwood 12 

Deering 3 

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine – Freshman Piper Catanese hit for the cycle and drove in seven, leading Marshwood to this Class A South win.

She had a two-run homer in the first, an RBI single in the third, a two-run double in the fourth, and a two-run triple in the sixth.

Emily Hester added three hits, scored four runs and drove in two, while Bella Pomarico and Lindsay Bennett both had two hits. Kelsie Strong added one hit and one RBI for the Hawks.

Newmarket 16

FARMINGTON - Kierra Souphakhot had two hits, drove in three and scored three runs for the Mules in this Division IV win.

Lily Thompson and Emma Surina both scored three runs for Newmarket.

York 22 

Traip Academy 2 

KITTERY, Maine – Sophomore Lindsay Rivers had three hits and four RBIs and Maddie Fitzgerald homered and drove in four as Class B York won this five-inning game at Class C Traip.

Ella Moon allowed one hit over five innings, fanning seven.

Kingswood 5 

Oyster River 3

DURHAM -  Gracy Spirito’s three hits and two RBIs led Oyster River in this Division II loss.

Lorelye LeClair added two hits for the Bobcats, while Kate Michaud, Maddy Veno, and Maeve Hickok all had one.

NORTH CONWAY - Anthony DiMartino's six goals and three assists led St. Thomas Aquinas to this Division II win.

Finley DeTolla added four goals and two assists for the Saints, while Johnny Resch (two goals), Jackson Estes (goal, three assists), Aidan Morrison (goal, assist), and Trent Salyards (two assists) all figured in the scoring.

DOVER - Ryan Ciolfi had three goals and one assist as the Warriors won their eight straight Division II game.

Antonio Franciosa and Tanyon Ziolkowski both added two goals for the Warriors, while Lukas Botnick had one. Ziolkowski, Botnick and Tim Kollmorgen all had one assist in the win.

FALMOUTH, Maine – Kevin Cougler had three goals and one assist, and Milo Closson had one goal for Falmouth in this Class A loss for Marshwood.

KITTERY, Maine – Tucker Johnson scored all three goals for Traip (4-6) in this Class C loss.

LONDONDERRY - Avery Ruhnke’s four goals and two assists led Portsmouth to this Division I win.

Charlotte Marswon had three goals and two assists, and Annie Parker had three goals for the Clippers.

Teammates Morgan Ruhnke (two goals, two assists), Ginger Vinciguerra (two goals), Lily Patterson (two goals, assist), Lexi Stanley (goal), Anya Bake (goal), Emily Kumph (goal) and Addie Deslie (two assists) all figured in the scoring.

Portsmouth goalie Sage Bussiere had three saves.

LACONIA - Megan Leahy and Lizzy Holden both had four goals, and Cat Vetter, Reece Anderson and Kensley Harris all had two for St. Thomas Aquinas in this Division III win.

Annita Parmelee, Grace Talbot and Charlotte De Tolla all had one goal for the Saints. Teammate Gracie Pettinato had four saves in net, and Juliana Grella and Ana Frederick starred defensively.

WEARE – Abby Wilber had six goals, and Maia Delano added five for Winnacunnet in this Division II win.

Shea Graham added four goals for the Warriors, and Tegan Rooney had one.

WOLFEBORO - Waverly Oake-Libow and Elsa Pueschel both had four goals and one assist for Oyster River in this Division II win.

For Pueschel, she reached the 100-point milestone in the win.

Sophie Royal had three goals and one assist for the Bobcats, while Grace Royal (goal, two assists), Elizabeth Walent (goal, assist) and Mia Weglarz (assist), and Keira Ferris (assist) all figured in the scoring.

Oyster River goalie Eliza Farwell had 17 saves.

SCARBOROUGH, Maine - Sarah Theriault’s five goals and three assists led Marshwood (7-2) to this Class A win.

Izzy Young had four goals for the Hawks, while Lindley Gori (two goals, assist), Hadley Prewitt (goal, two assists), Maeve Long (goal, assist), Madison Poitras (goal) and Liv Drake (goal) all contributed.

Marshwood goalie Lauren Walker had eight saves, behind the defensive efforts from Eva Hersey, Elle McDaniel, Lana Emery, Kaley Donovan and Liv Holt.

In doubles, Aidan Shilman and Hey Tenne won 8-2 at No. 1, and Henry Anderson and Welsh won 8-6 at No. 2; No. 3 doubles was not played due to court time.

DERRY – Dom Theos (No. 2, 8-2), Robert Berthel (No. 3, 8-4), Ryan Byrnes (No. 4, 8-4), and Lance Makabali (No. 5, 8-3) won in singles for Exeter in this Division I match.

In doubles, Charlie Gaughan and Theos won 8-1 at No. 1, Berthel and Oliver Berardino won 9-8 at No. 2, and Byrnes and Nick Myers won 8-4 at No. 3.

ROCHESTER - George Mitropolous (No. 4, 8 -1) and Ethan Hackett (No. 5, 9-7) won in singles, and Mitropolous and Cam Brochu won in doubles for Spaulding in this Division I match.

DOVER – Alex Molda (No. 1, 8-0), Ryan Whiting (No. 2, 8-0), Jack Smith (No. 3, 8-1), Sam White (No. 4, 8-4), Arthur Pivorotto (No. 5, 8-5) and Johnny Kovares (No. 6, 8-1) all won in singles for St. Thomas Aquinas (11-3) in this Division III match.

For Molda, a freshman, he ended the regular season with a 14-0 record at No. 1 singles.

In doubles, Molda and Whiting won 8-2 at No. 1, Smith and White won 9-7 at No. 2, and Pivorotto and Nicholas Souther won 8-4 at No. 3.

DOVER – The Green Wave won its 30th straight match and improved to 13-0 on the season with this Division I win.

Taylor Wilson (No. 1, 8-0), Joci Faasen (No. 2, 8-1), Tory Vitko (No. 3, 8-0), Riya Ramdev (No. 4, 8-0), Mia Mozzoni (No. 5, 8-1) and Kate Ross (No. 6, 8-1) all won in singles for Dover.

In doubles, Wilson and Faasen won 8-0 at No. 1, Ross and Ramdev won 8-1 at No. 2, and Sarah Bastille and Ashlynn Swierk won 8-2 at No. 3.

MILFORD - Sophia Jundi (No. 1, 8-0), Aiofe Ryan (No. 2, 8-3), Lindsay Lee (No. 3, 8-0), Sam Ruel (No. 4, 8-0), and Maeve Hondo (No. 5, 8-0) all won in singles for Portsmouth (10-4) in this final match of its Division II regular season. Milford forfeited No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.

In doubles, Jundi and Caylie Cook won 8-1 at No. 1, and Lee and Anne Syphers won 8-2 at No. 2.

In doubles, Gibson and Farwell won 8-1 at No. 1, Sofia Karageorgos and Demarest won 8-1 at No. 2, and Schaier and Zehetner won 8-1 at No. 3.
