Seacoast Roundup: Exeter girls hold off Concord at Merrimack invite; Avery brothers homer

MERRIMACK – Autumn Fabiano and Rachel Poulin each won an event and the Exeter High School girls track team pulled out a one-point win at the 16-team Merrimack Invitational at Merrimack High School.

Exeter placed first with a team score of 66, while Concord was second with 65.

Nashua South (58), Nashua North (56) and Pinkerton (55.5) rounded out the top five, respectively.

Fabiano won the shot put (33 feet, 10 inches) and was fifth in the discus (96-7), and Rachel Poulin won the javelin (113-5).

Exeter’s Danica Caron was second in the 800 (2:23.46) and Alexis Paterna was second in the 3,200 (11:48.18).

Other top-five performances from Exeter came from Rayna Thompson (third, 400, 59.41), Clara Knab (fourth, 800, 2:26.95), Claire Ahern (fourth, long jump, 14-9) and Sydney MacVicar (fifth, 300 hurdles, 51.97).

BOYS TRACK

Exeter places 11th at Merrimack invite 

MERRIMACK – Exeter had four fourth-place placements and placed 11th in the 16-team Merrimack Invitational.

Pinkerton and Nashua South tied for the top score with 96 points, and Nashua North was third (59). Exeter had a team score of 21.

Placing fourth in their respective events for Exeter were Gavin Malark (800, 2:00.49), Spencer Mann (3,200, 9:50.51), Thoren Kersten-Guiler (triple jump, 40-10) and Thomas Eastwood (pole vault, 11-0).

BASEBALL

Portsmouth 1

KEENE - The Blackbirds scored three runs in the second inning and improved to 10-4 with this Division I win.

Gar Hindle had three hits for Portsmouth (7-7), which stranded nine runners, five in scoring position. Patrick Bancroft had two hits for the Clippers, and Zavier Lampert had one.

Portsmouth's Jake Carlisle allowed five hits and four runs, three earned, over five innings, walking one and striking out two.

BEDFORD - Exeter scored five runs in the seventh inning of this Division I game on three bases-loaded walks and a two-run single by sophomore Brennan Schimoler.

Hayden Schimoler struck out the only batter he faced with the bases loaded to end the game, and earning the save.

Shea LaFleur had two hits and and an RBI for Exeter (13-1), and Mike Caron had two hits and scored a run.

HUDSON - The Broncos scored all four of their runs in the third inning of this Division I win. Nate MacGregor had a hit and an RBI for Dover, while Grant Davis and Roger Mercier both had two hits, and Will Angers had one.

Dover's Alex Cook struck out five and allowed four hits and four runs, three earned, in three innings.

St. Thomas Aquinas 10

DOVER - Timmy Avery had two home runs and five RBIs, and brother, Kenny, homered and had three RBIs for St. Thomas Aquinas in a Division II, five-inning game.

Graham Willerer didn't allow a hit and struck out six across five innings, earning the win. Michael Skowron and Cade Murphy both had two hits for the Saints, and Willerer, Sam Grondin, Thaao Papakonstantis and Ryan Gould all had one.

DURHAM - Oyster River's Landy Wolusky allowed five hits and three earned runs over seven innings in this Division II loss.

Ryan Michaud had two hits and scored a run for the Bobcats.

DOVER - The Eagles scored 10 runs in the sixth inning, rallying for this Division IV win.

Kian Littlefield had three doubles, drove in two and scored three for PCA (7-3). PCA's Ike Kohl, Jason Ludwig, and Brayden Leland combined for a no-hitter and 11 strikeouts.

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Gus Alexander scattered eight hits and struck out eight as Marshwood improved to 9-2 with this Class A South loss.

Liam Tiernan had three hits for the Hawks, while Ronan Garrett, Silas Reimels and Ronan Casey all had one.

YORK, Maine - Leo Sullivan allowed two hits and struck out seven in a complete-game Class B South win for the Wildcats.

Brody Gullison blasted a two-run homer for York, while John Jacobsohn scored on a Connor Fell sacrifice fly.

PORTLAND, Maine - Colby Christiansen struck out eight over seven innings, He also had three hits, leading Traip to this Class C South win.

Alec Webster and Chris Balano both had two doubles and two RBIs for the Rangers, while Jack Downs had two hits.

YORK, Maine - Nya Avery's two-out, two-RBI single in the fifth led York (8-0) to this Class B South win.

Ella Hickey, Sarah Orso and Lindsay Rivers all had two hits for the Wildcats, while McKayla Kortes struck out 10 in the win.

EXETER - Seven Blue Hawks had two hits as Exeter improved to 10-3 with this Division I win.

Summer LeClerc had two hits, three RBIs and scored three runs for the Blue Hawks, while Annie Christiana and Dejah Rondeau both had two hits and two RBIs.

Kristen Bickford, Avery Allard and Maddy Mann all had two hits and an RBI for Exeter, and Madi Paige (two RBIs), Mykenna Whittier (hit, two runs, RBI), Emmie Davis (hit), Alexa Schlager (hit) and Keagan Donohue (two runs) contributed.

ROCHESTER - Caitlin Willis had two hits and an RBI, and Meg Uraskevich and Maddie Hartman both had one hit and one RBI for Spaulding in a Division I loss. Spaulding's Avery Grant had a hit and scored a run.

CONCORD - Abbie Gaynor took a perfect game into the seventh, but settled for a one-hit, seven-strikeout, complete-game Division III win for the Saints.

Gaynor helped her cause with two hits and two RBIs. Teammates Elizabeth Flynn, Bizzy Pelletier, and Maddy Hoyt all had a hit and scored a run for STA (12-0), while Amelia Anderson, Emma Toriello and Kaity Kelly all had a hit.

DURHAM - Alex Moody had five goals and Jake Failla had one goal and seven assists for Oyster River in this Division II contest.

Tyler Callander added three goals for the Bobcats, while Dee Tsakiris, Aidan Golding, Evan Plourde, Joe Hinchcliffe, Jadyn Smart, Talon Beyer and Cabot Holden-Mount all had one goal.

Oyster River goalie Cole Norris had four saves.

HILLSBOROUGH - Finley DeTolla scored seven goals, including the 100th of his career, for St. Thomas Aquinas (8-3) in this Division II win.

Jackson Estes had three goals and three assists for the Saints, while Trent Salyards (two goals), Aiden Morrison (goal, three assists), Luke Daly (goal, assist), Michael Ellis (goal), Davin Pinterelli (goal), Ryan Resch (two assists) and Royal Edgerly (assist) all figured in the scoring.

HOLLIS - Beckett Rath's six goals and one assist led Winnacunnet to this Division II win. Tim Kollmorgen had two goals for the Warriors, while Lukas Botnick and Brian McCown both had one goal and three assists.

Winnacunnet's Alec Mitchell was 18-for-21 on faceoffs, and also scored, while Spencer Ziegler also had a goal.

Anna Lieberman, Grace McIlRoy and Brooke Battle all had one goal and one assist for the Blue Hawks, and Ava Welch (goal) and Josephine Vadala (assist) both figured in the scoring.

In doubles, Turner and Ellis won 8-0 at No. 2 and Phelps and Goldrick won 8-2 at No. 3. Exeter won at No. 1 by default.
