Scotland coach Greenway admits expectations must be realistic
Scotland netball coach Tamsin Greenway admits expectations of her team must be realistic as they slipped to another defeat in Birmingham.
Greenway is a former Commonwealth Games bronze medallist for England and was appointed to head the Scottish team two years ago.
But the gulf in class between her players and Jamaica's Sunshine Girls was certainly exposed at the National Exhibition Centre as the medal contenders won 78-34.
Greenway said: "We know we lack experience out there, but when we come up against these teams, what can we achieve? What is the next step in our journey? We were disappointed with our game the other day against Wales because we knew it wasn't how we can play.
"This is a really impressive Jamaican side, we asked questions of them – and of ourselves.
"Let's not be naïve: there has to be some shifts. There are some pay discrepancies – four or five players in my team don't even play Super League. We've got to understand where we're at.
"There has to be a greater good about netball in Europe. What does it look like? Do we invite teams in?
"Is there a way to replicate the Quad Series [played annually by Australia, England, New Zealand, and South Africa] that the top four have, what does that look like for all of those other teams – Uganda, Malawi, us, Wales – who want to be better?"
This summer, Team Scotland, supported by funding raised by National Lottery players, compromises of over 250 athletes, all vying for medal success.
Paralympian Jude Hamer insisted she was proud of her 3x3 wheelchair basketball team as they also slipped to defeat in the bronze medal match, losing narrowly 12-10 to England.
"We have come on leaps and bounds we have made in our understanding of this sport," she said.
"We have developed well over the week. That was only our 12th competitive game together, so for us to even put a team together was important.
"To find four girls who were Scottish and come through to this match was impressive.
"For us to change our game plan and have faith in each other to run a very close game against a team with three GB Paralympians, is something to be proud of."
Scotland were edged out by a single point in the bronze medal match of the men's 3x3 basketball, as Canada claimed the final place on the podium with a 13-12 victory.
Elsewhere, Wishaw's Billy Rodman slipped to an early defeat in the men's -73kg judo in Coventry.
